Meet Libra Hicks

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Libra Hicks. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Libra, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

I found my purpose when I became a mother to disabled sons. My oldest son, Anthony Jr., is 19 years old, has Cerebral Palsy and Epilepsy. He is 100% dependent for all needs and requires 24/7 care. And my younger son, Lyric, who is 9 years old with Level 2 Autism. Having these little guys has shown me my purpose. I started as a disability advocate, helping families advocate for their little ones with disabilities. While advocating, I became a sneaker designer, creating sneakers that represent different diagnoses so people could not only be fashionable but also intentional with their fashion. While designing sneakers and advocating for the disability community, I decided to drop 110lbs and add Health and Wellness Coach to my resume. Helping moms who double as caregivers achieve better health through my online program.

If it weren’t for my boys, I don’t believe I would’ve found my purpose in this lifetime.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I am a Philanthropist, Sneaker Designer, and Health and Wellness Coach. All that I do ties into my children, their diagnosis, and their lifestyle. I wanted to make sure that the intentions behind anything someone decides to support of mine are felt. What I do is special and unique in a sense. What I do encompasses the everyday life that caregivers and individuals with disabilities have to experience. I’ve always wanted my children to feel like they mattered to me through the work that I do. All 3 Brands that I run are an extension of not just me but my children. Our Children’s Story, Inc. was created with my oldest in mind. Helping families that are similar to ours navigate the world of disabilities. Ja’Dore Sneaks was created for my youngest son, Lyric Ja’Dore. Because my son loves clothes and shoes, I decided to create a business that allows them to be creative and stylish while representing their disability. Fitmom Fitness Situation, my health and wellness brand, was created to help women like me, mothers who double as caregivers, achieve better health and wellness through my online health and wellness program.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Effective communication, the ability to take feedback, and emotional stability are the qualities that enable me to be as successful as I am in my career choices. No matter what kind of business you start or run, you have to communicate effectively without it becoming tense or hostile. Being able to communicate with your clients so they become repeat customers is imperative to retaining them. Taking feedback so you know precisely where you need to grow is necessary; otherwise, growth can’t happen. Emotional stability is key to avoiding brawls with your clients. Sometimes, when we aren’t emotionally developed, we can misbehave, causing our reputation to plummet and clients to leave us for someone else.

Anyone in the early stages of building a business should understand that it takes time and trial and error. Have guidance so that only a minimal number of decisions are mistakes. Building a business takes time, so don’t rush the process. Allow yourself an opportunity to grow with the ideas you are morphing into reality.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?

The most impactful thing my parents did for me was to let me watch them and mimic. My parents have always owned their own businesses. I’ve only seen my parents go to a job to clock in maybe 2-3 times in my life. I witnessed what it took to get a business off the ground and make it successful. My dad spent his entire life showing me what that looked like so I wouldn’t have to clock into a job and leave my disabled babies with someone who could harm them. He always feared my boys would be mistreated if they left my side. My parents were the true testament to what it meant to get it out of the mud and sustain. Honestly, if I hadn’t seen that, I would be fearful of being a business owner.
