Meet Lilly Ankeney-fox

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lilly Ankeney-fox. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Lilly, so great to have you with us today. There are so many topics we want to ask you about, but perhaps the one we can start with is burnout. How have you overcome or avoided burnout?

As a business owner, I’ve faced my fair share of burnout. The physical demands of the job, combined with the pressure to meet deadlines and deliver high-quality results, can take a toll on both body and mind. To overcome burnout, I make sure to take time for myself. It is okay to set boundaries by not answering calls past a certain time & taking weekends off. I prioritize self-care and relaxation.. book a spa day here & there. Maybe a weekend getaway, away from the ringing phone. This has helped to clear my mind and recharge my batteries.

In addition to taking that daily time for myself, I’ve also found that having a hobby outside of work helps to combat burnout. For me, that hobby is working out. It’s an easy outlet that allows me to express myself in a different way and provides a much-needed break from the demands of blacksmithing. Exercise helps to reduce stress and anxiety, which can contribute to burnout. By prioritizing my physical and mental health, I’m able to maintain a healthy work-life balance and come to work feeling refreshed and motivated.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

The life behind Colorado Foxy Trims originates from Ankeney Equine Training. I am proud to say both were built from the ground up & at a young age. Representing the dedication, hard work, and determination that I have poured into creating something out of nothing.. both business are truly special to me. The most exciting part is knowing the risk I took in following my dreams, regardless of my age. It’s a constant reminder that with passion and perseverance, anything is possible. I am grateful for the opportunity to inspire others and show them that age is just a number when it comes to achieving success.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I would say the three qualities that were most impactful throughout my career as a blacksmith were patience, creativity, and attention to detail. Patience is key when working with metal & an animal that does not speak your language. It takes time and precision to create beautiful and functional pieces. Being creative allows me to come up with unique designs that set my work apart & help the horses I work under. Having a strong attention to detail ensures that every piece I create is of the highest quality. These qualities have served me well in my career & have helped me succeed as a blacksmith. My advice to the folks early in their journey is that it is okay to take your time and enjoy your work. Learn as much as you can & for as long as you can! it is true what they say, “Love what you do & you’ll never work a day in your life.”

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

The most impactful thing my mother did for me was teaching me to be self-sufficient and a confident communicator. Growing up, she ran various successful businesses & encouraged me to do the same. Her guidance and support throughout my life enabled me to navigate challenges with grace and successfully overcome life’s obstacles. Thanks to her wisdom and encouragement, I have developed strength, independence, and resilience that continue to serve me well throughout my journey as a businesswoman & equine professional.
