We recently connected with Lina Cooper and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Lina with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I have always had pretty good work ethic. Actually I think every single thing that I have ever achieved comes from my hard work and not my talent/connections/etc. I think the biggest secret to having great work ethic is being able to motivate yourself. I never had issues with motivating myself only because making music for a living was something that I wanted more than anything in the entire world. So working towards that goal has always made sense and I rarely ever had to make myself do something I didn’t want to do.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am an indie songwriter, artist and producer based in Los Angeles, CA, a recent graduate of Berklee college of music and I like to call myself a “Yellow Manic Pixie Dream Girl”. I was born in a small industrial town in the Eastern part of Ukraine called Donetsk. I fell in love with music ever since she was a kid, and I always knew it was music for me.
I moved to Boston at the age of 17 to get my Bachelor’s degree at Berklee and then moved to Los Angeles after I graduated. My biggest inspirations have always been pop artists, producers and songwriters, such as Taylor Swift, Halsey, Lorde, Jack Antonoff, Billie Eilish and FINNEAS, Ed Sheeran, Julia Michaels, JP Saxe, Marina, Olivia O’Brien, John Mayer, Olivia Rodrigo, Louis Bell and many more.
I am now writing for other people, releasing my own music, performing all around LA, writing for sync and many more exciting things.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Hard work. This one is the most important factor of anybody’s success in my opinion. You can get lucky once or twice, but only hard work will actually get you to where you want to be. 2. Being able to make friends. And I am talking about real friends! I was extremely lucky to meet some amazing people that became my friends and collaborators. Without them I would never be where I am today.
3. Mistakes. All the mistakes I’ve made taught me some very important lessons. I truly believe that you can’t thrive without experiencing quite a lot of failure 🙂
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
I feel overwhelmed all the time to be honest and I wish I had a strategy that worked every single time. I am still figuring it out. All I can say that taking care of yourself works most of the time and definitely won’t hurt! Going on a run, making a healthy dinner, talking to a friend or your partner, taking a bath or a long walk. These things help me at the very least a little bit!
