We were lucky to catch up with Lina Shuliar recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lina , we are so happy that our community is going to have a chance to learn more about you, your story and hopefully even take in some of the lessons you’ve learned along the way. Let’s start with self-care – what do you do for self-care and has it had any impact on your effectiveness?
Since I travel frequently for work, I make sure to prioritize self-care to allow myself to relax after each trip. For instance, if I’ve been at a convention for three consecutive days, working 12 hours a day, I take a complete break for the next three days. It’s challenging to do nothing, but I’m trying to make the most of it by playing games and watching anime. I also include massages and chiropractic sessions in my routine. Additionally, I’m trying to limit my phone usage and avoid checking emails and messages. Of course, this is an ideal scenario, so even just having one full day without any work-related activities is a win-win situation.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m an award-winning tattoo artist who travels the US for work. I’ve participated in various conventions and shows as an artist and a tattoo judge. My job is my passion, and I love connecting with people.
Trust, security, and understanding are the core of my artistic philosophy. Tattoos are more than just pictures; they’re a collaborative process between two individuals creating something meaningful and incredible together.
I specialize in dark art with Gothic elements, featuring a lot of contrast. People often recognize my tattoos in the wild, and I frequently receive pictures from my clients when they meet others. It’s heartwarming to see how these connections are formed. It’s like a small community of like-minded individuals who appreciate our shared aesthetic, just like I do.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
First up, I reckon one of the most crucial social skills is communication. That’s where empires rise and fall, you know? Just kidding, but seriously, mastering your communication is the key to any job, especially when you’re working with people directly. As a tattoo artist, I have a lot of conversations before, during, and after each session. It’s super important to me to understand each person and their preferences so I can create a perfect tattoo that they’ll love for years to come.
Next, I think it’s really important how you handle yourself. I don’t have a fancy word for it, but it’s just how your mental state is affected by your job. If your job is stressful, it’s crucial to know your triggers and how to stay calm and composed. I’ve gone through a lot of meditation and therapy to become who I am today. Stress is my worst enemy, and if I feel overwhelmed, I don’t even touch my phone. I don’t want to affect anyone with my negative mood right now. That’s what I call “handling yourself.”
Lastly, self-care is super important. If we’re feeling stressed or tired, it’s important to take care of ourselves and not let our stress get the best of us. I’ve been thinking about this a lot, and I’ve learned the hard way how to ground meditate and take care of myself. You can always manage your stress, but you also need to understand that you’re not a superhero who can live forever. I’m 33, and self-care is my top priority these days. My job involves a lot of physical work in an unusual sitting position, so I make sure to take care of myself and schedule doctor or chiropractor appointments regularly. It’s simple, but it’s also so hard to admit that you need these things to just keep doing your job.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I absolutely adore collaborations! As an artist, I have a wealth of ideas on how to express my creativity in various areas. Fashion, ceramics, decor, cars, and any other surface that can be painted are my passions. Of course, the most exciting collaborations are always with fashion, like clothing, bags, shoes, and more. I love the idea that my art can be integrated into everyday life. I dream of seeing my work displayed on the walls of restaurants or metaphysical shops. Another dream I have is collaborating with an author and creating illustrations for a book or comic series. I’m a huge reader and follow many illustrators, and their work always inspires me to think about how I can create something similar. I absolutely adore collaborations!
