Meet Lincoln Pemberton

We were lucky to catch up with Lincoln Pemberton recently and have shared our conversation below.

Lincoln, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

I developed strong resilience through the influence of my aunt, Dr. Jean Joseph, who raised me since age 8. Dr. Joseph, an immigrant from the Caribbean island of Dominica, achieved significant success in corporate America, rising through the ranks to become a respected public figure in our borough. Witnessing her build a successful career from the ground up inspired me to forge my own path and strive for similar accomplishments.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

My name is Lincoln M. Pemberton,I go by the artist name “Michael Manli” and I’m the lead developer of “Battle of the Forsaken”, a mobile game I have been independently developing for the past three years. I’m also the co founder of the creative agency Raw Syndicate.

Driven by a lifelong passion for fighting games, I transitioned into game development from a background in music production and sound design. This project has allowed me to hone my skills in every aspect of game development, from design and development to sound design, marketing, narrative, voice acting, and project management.

I recognize that as a solo developer, there may be areas where Battle of the Forsaken can be further refined. However, I believe the game demonstrates a strong foundation and a unique vision. I am eager to learn and grow as a developer and confident that with further refinement and the support of a team, this project has the potential to reach its full potential.

Prior to game development, I gained valuable experience in the creative industries. I worked at various music labels and as a freelance film scorer for NBC Universal. In 2012, I co-founded Raw Syndicate with my partner Anthony Rowley. Initially an art and fashion collective, Raw Syndicate has evolved over the years, with game development being our latest venture.”

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

My top three professional qualities are extreme curiosity, consistency, and resilience. I believe these qualities are fundamental to achieving success, regardless of innate talent. Curiosity drives me to constantly learn and explore new things , while consistency allows me to build strong foundations and make steady progress. Finally, resilience enables me to overcome challenges and setbacks, which are inevitable in any professional endeavor. I believe these qualities, combined with a strong work ethic, can lead to significant accomplishments and continuous growth.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

Myself. The most instrumental factor in my success has been my self-reliance. Throughout my journey, I’ve learned to trust my own instincts and prioritize my goals. For example, I faced significant skepticism when I decided to independently develop my own video game. However, I maintained unwavering belief in my vision and ultimately achieved my objective.

This experience reinforced the importance of self-confidence and internal motivation. I’ve cultivated a practice of positive self-talk, focusing on my strengths and acknowledging my accomplishments. I believe that self-respect and a strong self control are essential for navigating challenges and achieving one’s full potential.
