We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Linda Bertino. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Linda below.
Hi Linda, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
From overcoming the sting of childhood bullying to embracing the unique challenges of scoliosis, my journey has been one of resilience and self-discovery. Growing up, I was teased for having an overbite and a thin frame, but these experiences only fueled my drive to find my true purpose: to uplift and inspire others. Today, I use my platform and success to empower young people—especially young girls—to recognize their own beauty and believe in their limitless potential. It’s been my greatest honor to show them that, no matter the obstacles, they can achieve anything they set their minds to.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m excited to share my journey as a model, which I have been pursuing for about six years, and the impactful connections I’ve made within the fashion industry. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with a diverse array of magazines, designers, and brands that have enriched my career. Notable experiences include working with Resident Magazine, Impact Wealth Magazine, and S revista, along with esteemed designers like Oscar Lopez (OSCAR G), Anne Fontaine, and Anouk Wipprecht. Each of these roles has allowed me to explore different facets of fashion and express my creativity on a larger scale.
In addition to modeling, my artwork has been published in magazines, showcasing my passion for creativity in various mediums. I specialize in painting with oil and acrylics, creating one of a kind pieces on canvas, clothing, and even pop sockets. I also used to sell my artwork at Artist Alley Clematis in downtown West Palm Beach, which was a fun experience that allowed me to connect with the local art community and share my creations with others. Art has always been a significant part of my life, and I love how it complements my work in fashion, providing another avenue for self-expression.
Being an esthetician also makes me happy because I get to see the smiles on people’s faces when they feel beautiful after a service. It’s incredibly rewarding to help others enhance their natural beauty and boost their confidence.
My modeling work extends to prominent retailers like Saks Fifth Avenue, where I’ve represented brands such as Badgley Mischka , Carolina Herrera, and Akris, as well as eCosmetics, featuring products from luxury brands like Gucci, Paco Rabanne, and Tom Ford. Additionally, I’ve had the honor of modeling for boutiques in Palm Beach Island, such as Cou Boutique, Sisley Paris, and Lyfecycle fashion, which are known for their unique offerings.
In the U.S., I’ve contributed to magazines like Elléments Magazine, Elegant Magazine, MOST Magazine, and OFF TOWN Magazine. On the international front, I’ve worked with prestigious publications, including GMARO Magazine, MOEVIR Magazine, and Malvie Magazine in Paris, and Swanky Magazine in London. Each of these experiences has not only enhanced my skills but also broadened my perspective on fashion as a global language.
Beyond modeling, I’m deeply committed to giving back through charity events, supporting causes like Big Dog Ranch Rescue, the Baker Institute for Children with Hearing Loss in Kenya, Furry Friends Jupiter, and Make-A-Wish. These initiatives are close to my heart and remind me of the positive impact we can make through our passions.
Looking ahead, I have exciting events and projects in the works that I can’t wait to share with my audience. I’m dedicated to continuing this journey while uplifting others along the way.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reflecting on my journey as a model and artist, three qualities have significantly impacted my path: resilience, networking, and a strong work ethic. Additionally, being an inspiration to others, particularly in the scoliosis community, has shaped my experiences profoundly.
Resilience
The fashion and art industries can be incredibly challenging, with constant competition and rejection. Developing resilience has allowed me to bounce back from setbacks and keep pushing forward. For those who are early in their journey, I advise cultivating a mindset that embraces challenges as opportunities for growth. Surround yourself with supportive people who uplift you during tough times, and remember that persistence is key.
Networking
Building relationships within the industry has been crucial to my success. Many opportunities arise from connections, whether through fellow models, photographers, or designers. For newcomers, I recommend attending events, joining social media groups, and reaching out to others in the field. Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself and express your passion; you never know what doors might open through these connections.
Strong Work Ethic
Consistently putting in the effort and striving for excellence is vital in this field. From maintaining professionalism during shoots to continually improving my craft, a strong work ethic has set me apart. My advice for those just starting is to remain dedicated and committed to your goals. Set clear objectives, stay organized, and be proactive in seeking out new opportunities for growth and learning. Most importantly, I encourage everyone to continue pursuing their dreams and aspirations, as doing what you love will take you far.
Additionally, being an inspiration to the scoliosis community is a role I cherish deeply. I’ve received heartfelt feedback from mothers who say I’ve positively impacted their young daughters, and this often brings me to tears. Knowing that I can motivate others and provide hope is incredibly fulfilling and drives me to advocate for those living with scoliosis.
To stay physically and mentally fit, I practice Brazilian jiu-jitsu and striking, which not only keeps me fit but is also crucial for me as a young woman to learn self-defense. I also incorporate yoga at home to help maintain my shape and mobility.
In summary, resilience, networking, a strong work ethic, and the ability to inspire others are essential qualities that can significantly impact one’s journey in modeling and the arts. Embrace every challenge, invest in relationships, stay committed to your craft, and remember that your journey can positively inspire others along the way.
We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
I believe it’s essential to find a balance between going all in on your strengths and developing in areas where you may not feel as strong. Your strengths are what make you unique and can set you apart in any industry, but being adaptable and willing to grow in other areas is crucial for long-term success and personal development.
For me, my strengths have always been my creativity, ambition, and ability to deeply connect with people. These qualities have propelled my modeling career and artistic pursuits forward. However, I know that relying solely on my strengths could limit my potential. For instance, when I began modeling, I felt confident in my ability to pose and create beautiful content. But when it came to building connections and navigating the business side of modeling, I had to invest time in learning new skills, such as effective networking and understanding contract negotiations. Taking steps to move beyond my comfort zone opened doors to more significant opportunities, partnerships, and a broader understanding of my field.
One of the most impactful lessons I’ve learned was when I started working with international publications and high-profile brands. I realized that while my confidence on set was a strength, improving my communication skills was essential to work seamlessly with diverse teams and adapt to different cultural expectations. Being bilingual (with English as my first language and fluently learning Spanish as my second) allowed me to bridge communication gaps and communicate more effectively. Embracing this growth mindset enabled me to adapt quickly, work harmoniously with teams worldwide, and expand my career in ways I hadn’t previously imagined.
My advice to those starting their journey is to focus on what you naturally excel at because those strengths are your unique value. Don’t shy away from the areas that challenge you. Growth often comes from pushing yourself beyond what’s comfortable. Developing new skills can add depth to your strengths.
In summary, focusing on your strengths gives you confidence and solidifies your identity, but expanding your skills and embracing growth outside your comfort zone makes you more versatile and better prepared for unexpected opportunities that come your way.
Do what you love, trust yourself, and keep being uniquely you, it will take you far!
