Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Linda Freeman. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Linda, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
Great question! Twenty years ago I was trying to figure that out. I had a very successful corporate career as head of global communications. I was making great money. I was working from home years before the pandemic made that a normal thing. I was good at my job. But I wasn’t feeling fulfilled. My hobbies: writing poetry, practicing yoga and swing dancing were much more aligned with who I was than being in a corporate environment, even though I was writing corporate communications every day. I decided to start focusing on the things I loved about my life, that excited me, that made me want to live, and are bringing more of those things into my daily life. I explored my priorities, my goals, what was important to me and what wasn’t and decided to recreate my life aligned with these things: my values and what I valued.
I clearly know that my life purpose is to live an inspired and inspirational life of creativity, vitality, productivity, financial freedom, gratefulness and love. And the answer to my satisfaction is to be an inspired and inspirational teacher and help transform people’s lives.
Now decision making is easy! Does whatever I am questioning support my purpose or not?! So the first decision was to quit my corporate career and become a writer, yoga and swing dance teacher. My life has become magical ever since.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
In 2004, I left my corporate career to embark on an exciting adventure of fulfilling my purpose to be an inspiring and inspirational teacher and transform the lives of others. I do this under my own terms by creating my own brand and businesses. These include 1. Founding Got2Lindy Dance Studios, where my husband and I teach swing dance (Lindy Hop) to adults with the intention of turning non-dancers into dancers and strangers into friends. By making this my focus I have created a wonderful, loving community of dancers who socialize and engage with the dance and with each other, including traveling together and a few marriages! 2. Founding Bliss Body Yoga and being a Yoga instructor who focuses on students feeling better in and about their body. 3. Being an award-winning, internationally recognized poet (under my full name of Linda McCauley Freeman) with a book published last year (The Family Plot, Backroom Window Press 2022) and another on the way. 4. Founding “Create Your Life Workshops” a proven method I teach in weekend workshops to discover what you want and how to get it.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
You will be happy and satisfied as long as what you do is aligned with who you uniquely are, your values and your purpose.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Managing multiple businesses and wearing as many hats as I do can become overwhelming. I am a great list maker and I find breaking down what I need to do into lists I can then conquer and cross off makes everything more manageable. I also am careful to divide my list into categories of business tasks and life tasks so I don’t forget I am a whole person!
