We were lucky to catch up with Linda Nguyen recently and have shared our conversation below.
Linda, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Imposter syndrome often arises when I compare my accomplishments to those of others. However, I have realized that each person’s journey is unique, and we possess different skill sets. Therefore, expecting that I could have achieved exactly what they have is unrealistic, and vice versa. When asked to speak on panels, I sometimes feel inadequate, thinking I haven’t accomplished enough to inspire others. However, I have discovered that when I embrace vulnerability and openly share my experiences, someone in the audience always resonates with me.
In the past, I used to believe that I had to complete projects entirely on my own to showcase my strengths. But as I have gained wisdom through experience, I have learned the importance of relinquishing control and delegating tasks. I now understand that getting things done is more valuable than seeking perfection, and adjustments can always be made along the way. When delegating, I either initiate the work before passing it on or provide guidance while giving others the autonomy to execute. I trust that they will seek clarification if necessary. By working together, we can accomplish so much more.
Whenever negative emotions associated with imposter syndrome arise, I remind myself of the small wins I have achieved and the valuable lessons I have learned. I recognize that these experiences provide me with insights that I can share with others, helping them avoid my mistakes.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a Venture Builder who works with visionary leaders who need support in execution, turning their ideas into reality. I have elevated impactful projects for nearly a decade, honoring the heritage, stories, and ideas of communities through brands, organizations, and initiatives. Infusing my work with a deep-seated intention of compassion, I have worked alongside enterprising visionaries, global spiritual leaders, and local community organizers to lift, launch, and ignite purpose-driven projects. As a board member for various cultural organizations and a builder for emerging endeavors, I cultivate impactful collaborations and meaningful connections. From the right intention emerges influential action, and it is with this authentic and curious vision that I continue to support diverse communities that bring the umami of our heritage to the forefront of our world.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Compassion: One of the most impactful qualities I developed was compassion. Seeing things from another person’s perspective, understanding their lack of knowledge, and empathizing with their struggles allowed me to build stronger connections and navigate challenging situations. Cultivate compassion by actively listening to others and seeking to understand their experiences. This can be done by engaging in meaningful conversations, being open to diverse perspectives, and participating in activities that promote understanding and inclusion.
Courage: Another crucial skill that made a significant difference in my journey was the courage to say no and set boundaries and the ability to respectfully speak up for myself and others. Recognizing the value of your time, energy, and well-being is essential. Don’t be afraid to decline opportunities that do not align with your goals or values, and have the courage to communicate your boundaries assertively. Developing this skill will help you maintain a healthy work-life balance, build self-confidence, and foster positive relationships. It may be uncomfortable at first, and with practice, it becomes easier, and the rewards are immeasurable.
Community: The power of a supportive community cannot be overstated. Investing the time to build a network of like-minded individuals, mentors, and supporters who share your interests, values, or aspirations can have a tremendous impact on your journey. Surround yourself with people who inspire and challenge you, who can offer guidance and support during difficult times, and who celebrate your successes. Seek out communities, both online and offline, that align with your interests and goals, and actively engage with them. Joining professional organizations, attending conferences, participating in networking events, and connecting with individuals through social media platforms are all effective ways to cultivate a strong support system. Success is rarely achieved alone; a community can provide the motivation, resources, and opportunities needed to thrive.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I seek individuals who share my passion for creating positive change and are dedicated to making a meaningful impact in the community. I am particularly interested in forming strategic alliances with organizations, corporations, and public entities that are aligned with my vision. Together, we can amplify our voices and work towards unity, forging a powerful impact.
I am especially drawn to individuals who defy traditional ideals and embrace their unique talents, regardless of societal norms. I believe that creatives, entrepreneurs, and non-traditionalists have the ability to pave a new path and inspire others through their lived experiences. I am looking to collaborate with individuals passionate about using their skills and talents to make a difference and create their own unique legacies.
A key aspect of my philosophy is the concept of SPACE – space for learning, community, alignment, collaboration, and impact. I believe that everyone has a story to tell and a dream to pursue. I am eager to collaborate with individuals who value and appreciate the importance of creating spaces where diverse perspectives can come together, fostering a sense of unity and understanding.
As someone with a personal connection to the Vietnamese Boat People, I am particularly interested in working with individuals who have similar experiences or share a passion for exploring their cultural heritage. I believe that the journey of first and second-generation children of immigrants, who often find themselves straddling multiple cultures, is a powerful narrative that deserves attention and understanding. I am looking to partner with individuals and cultural organizations that aim to bridge the gap between different cultures, helping individuals navigate their own paths of self-discovery and connection to their roots.
Ultimately, I seek collaborators who are curious, open-minded, and driven to make a positive impact. Together, we can explore and understand our collective stories, embrace diverse perspectives, and create a better future for all.
