We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Linda Wegmann a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Linda with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I’ve always been fiercely independent. I ran my own small design firm with three employees for 30 years and was also a single mother for 11 years of those. That requires dedication and hard work. As a painter now, nothing has really changed. I want to make something really good, and that requires hours and years of hard work, and its be best choice I’ve ever made to jump into that work.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I found the courage to jump into the world of painting nearly five years ago after a full career as a graphic designer. All my life I’ve wanted to paint but have no formal fine art education. Paint workshops and self training and determination are my education. The hardest thing I’ve every taken on is to find my voice in abstraction and paint. It’s much easier to paint an object, and though I admire any painter more ever since starting this journey, I have this overwhelming desire to paint abstractly. So this has been my journey in the last five year and of course I will continue for as long as I’m lucky to be around in this life.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I’ve always loved art and was the artist kid, but never imagined as a kid, you could actually have an art career. So I studied graphic design and had that journey first. It’s a love of something first followed by determination, and putting in the time required. I believe it will be a life long journey and feel extremely lucky to have that option.
Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
The challenge as an ’emerging artist” is putting in the work first, which for me is the easiest part, but it’s about finding your audience. The world is filled with incredible talent, and finding your niche is a challenge. The job is to continue digging deeper so that you are painting for just you, and in that way finding your authenticity. Its a challenge when your brain is filled with so many ideas.
