Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Linda Winter. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Linda, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
At a young age I felt I could do whatever it took to be successful. I have been interested in getting involved in organizations that made a difference. I had quiet confidence as a girl to be a part of groups where I was the only girl or maybe just a handful of girls. I don’t get intimitated easily I just believe in pushing forward to get the job done. I have had a ladies boutique, hair salon, make-up studio and wig center for 52 years and believe looking nice reflects your attitude. I always dress to the max because it shows my personality and I am representing my business. Some women are afraid to show who they are and dress down to not be noticed. I may be the only one in the room that dresses up but I don’t mind As Coco Chanel said, “Dress Shabbily and they remember the dress; Dress impeccably and they remember the woman.”
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I have been a hairdresser since 1970. I have always loved transforming customers by styling their hair, helping them with wigs, doing their make-up and teaching them about good skin care. In 1997 I created “”Accessories with a Flair!…and Hair in Greeley Colorado which is a boutique, hair salon make-up and wig center. I hae been lucky to attract customers from many states. Wigs are very popular for all ages. In 2016 I created my private label skin care line called “Star Natural Skin Care.” We took out all the cheap fillers and artificial ingredients to make an amazing line which makes your skin radiant and healthy. We specialize in personal service. We carry fun fashions ,awesome accessories, Wallaroo sun hats, and everything to make the ladies look HOT! I do many speaking engagements and fashion shows as entertainment at a convention or to raise funds at a fundraiser. I have sponsored Miss Rodeo Colorado for 21 years. I do Color Analysis and recently did a clinic for 48 rodeo queen hopefuls to make them look outstanding onstage. My brand is for any age, any size and any style. I provide Retail Therapy everytime they come to my boutique and they may hear a talented entertainer play my Grand Piano in my lobby! I have been on many Boards like The Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra, The Colorado Model Railroad Museum, The Downtown Develpoment Authority, North Colorado Medical Center, Colorado Women of Influence and more. Giving back to the community makes our city a fantastic place to live. In business, people buy you first and then they buy what you got (bad language) If you don’t live your business ,you’ll lose it. It’s about having class… about having sass….about having FLAIR!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I didn’t attend traditional college but I got a Cosmetology Degree which I am still using today. Never stop learning to perfect your craft and research what is happening now in your industry. Always have a business plan, have enough capital to run your business in slow times and read business books from the masters. I have always written down great ideas which I magically use in my business later. What you think about you bring about. Join networking groups for business support and getting know in the community. Never give in, never give up and listen to your heart to make your dream come true!
How would you describe your ideal client?
My ideal client is social, likes to travel, likes to look like a million bucks everyday, is happy and willing to do fun fashion things, is creative, never says no to a challenge and is willing to try new things. I am lucky to know dozens of women of all ages who have these qualities and make or lives better and are willing to do the dirty work in all their volunteer work!
