We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lindsay a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lindsay, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us today. We’re excited to dive into your story and your work, but first let’s start with a broader topic that might be stopping many of our readers from pursuing their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. How have you managed to persist despite haters and nay-sayers that inevitably follow folks who are doing something unique, special or off the beaten path?
Great question.
Not my favorite question, because it’s a painful one.
We all have people in our lives, who doubt us, question us or push us down.
Sometimes these people or groups of people are close to us, friends or family, or perhaps more removed from us, coworkers and acquaintances.
Either way, it’s hard to hear and feel people doubting you. Why is this so hard?
Because we believe them.
We have the same doubt for ourselves or are giving too much weight to their opinions.
Listening to wisdom when wisdom corrects our path is one thing, plain doubt or questioning is not wisdom. It’s not wisdom or support. It is the opposite, fear and doubt.
I have learned how to sift through wisdom versus others fear for me, doubt in me. This is TOUGH.
I have learned how to give less weight to other opinions.
I have learned that I am accountable to ME.
I have learned to trust myself. I have learned and track record shows- that if I take “a wrong turn” in life, I will pivot and keep going and I will figure it out.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
As a little girl I was obsessed with Disney and all things Disney Princess.
Growing up in Florida, I naturally wanted to work for Disney one day.
Fast forward to my college graduation and I moved back down to Florida and accepted a role as a Disney Princess/Character Performer.
A few years after living out my Dream as a Performer at Disney I started working for Universal Orlando Resort portraying Marilyn Monroe. I just finished my 7th contract with the company.
During my time as a performer, I found myself a divorced, single mom of 2, living paycheck to paycheck, living in my parents home and completely hopeless.
I decided one day that this wasn’t going to be my story, this wasn’t how my fairytale would end.
So, I did what any good Character Performer would do and I changed the negative story into a positive one.
Within 6 months I started a business and doubled my income, paid off debt, bought a home and so much more.
I started an entertainment company which is now known as MONROE. Luxury Entertainment & Events, as well as a women’s coaching platform & public speaking outlet, known as Women of Character.
At MONROE. Luxury Entertainment & Events, we create signature one-of-a-kind entertainment that fits your brand. We also produce live events.
At Women of Character, we are constantly aiming to serve women in a culture that is self-saturated and lacks self worth and core character.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Character.
When I think of what truly got me through, kept me going, kept me soft, yet strong and bold – CHARACTER.
If you don’t have character, you have nothing.
Character traits/Virtues I possess that have helped me, are:
-resilience
-determination
-courage
Just as an actor, or actress, has a strong skill set grounded in improv- Life is improv. You never know what is going to come your way, what will work, won’t work- you have to develop your character to get you through.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
Boundaries By Cloud & Townsend.
I have read so many books in the last few years. Many personal development, relationship books, although mainly books with a business emphasis.
But I think the most impactful and helpful, foundational one for me was Boundaries.
This helps us learn to not abandon ourselves, and I think having a strong relationship with boundaries is pivotal in every are of life, business, employee/employer, family, friends, etc. You have to have boundaries in all things in order to succeed.
