Meet Lindsay Bowen

We recently connected with Lindsay Bowen and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Lindsay, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?

When I think about where I get my resilience from, I think back to my childhood. Those years were filled with challenges that demanded strength and determination beyond my age. I chose to keep moving forward even when the path felt impossibly hard. Those formative experiences, combined with my choice to have courage, gave me grit and endurance that became the foundation of who I am.

That same resilience carried me into the early days of founding ROAM Humanitarian. It took—and still takes—relentless hard work. I spent countless hours sharing ROAM’s vision until one donor believed deeply enough in our mission to give us the boost we needed to launch. Perseverance also guided me in finding the right partners in each country—local leaders who truly understood their communities and shared our vision. As our team in the U.S. and abroad work tirelessly together, we see the impact across more than 35,000 lives—empowering young girls to escape FGM and child marriage, helping women rebuild after abuse and trafficking, strengthening underprivileged communities, supporting underfunded schools, and more.

In many ways, the resilience I leaned on as a child is the same resilience that fuels me today. It is what allows me to push through setbacks. Because I believe so firmly in the mission of ROAM, I continue, time and time again, to endure the rejections from potential donors, the endless red tape from municipalities around the world, and the challenge of identifying projects that are not only impactful but truly self-sustaining.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I live with my husband, Justin, ROAM Co-Founder, and our four incredible children in the mountains of Heber, Utah. I love the sun on my skin, old and new friends, being a mother, and authentic human connection. I have a deep love and passion for humanity and I have always felt my purpose is to be a connector between people—those who want to serve and those across the world in need of help. Through ROAM, I have the privilege of being that force of connection and change.

At ROAM Humanitarian, we believe in the power of service and cultural connection to change lives. Whether rescuing women from trafficking and FGM, supporting single mothers and orphans, building classrooms, or teaching skills that spark independence, every project empowers communities to thrive for the long term. We currently serve in eight countries worldwide: Tanzania, Nepal, Peru, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Fiji, Bali, and Cambodia.

Our nine-day humanitarian journeys combine service, cultural immersion, and adventure. We work alongside locals on impactful projects and foster connections that inspire growth, purpose, and perspective. Every moment is designed to make a lasting difference. Since 2020, ROAM has impacted over 33,000 lives globally.

One of our most significant and deeply personal projects is in Tanzania, where ROAM is building a Women’s Refuge Center—a property for women and children escaping FGM, child marriage, and other forms of abuse. This center will be a place for women to gather while providing education, clean water, meals, business opportunities, and a safe haven from a world that has often treated them unfairly. This project is incredibly close to my heart, shaped by the women and children I’ve witnessed escaping the horrors of entrenched cultural practices. If you’ve ever wanted to make a tangible, lasting difference in the world, I invite you to reach out and join us in this mission!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back on my journey with ROAM Humanitarian, three things have been foundational to its success: persistence, surrounding myself with the right people, and passion for my vision.

With persistence, I have pushed through moments when the path forward felt impossible, learning that dedication and hard work can overcome even the toughest challenges. By surrounding myself with the right people, our team is able to turn ideas into meaningful action every day. And my passion for the vision of ROAM has kept me moving forward, even in the face of setbacks, broken promises, and difficult decisions, reminding me why this work matters.

For anyone early in their journey, my advice is to persevere. Embrace challenges as opportunities, and refuse to give up, even when things are hard. Surround yourself with people who inspire you, who challenge you, and who share your vision. And above all, believe in your vision. If your endeavor is meaningful and important to you, your steadfast commitment will carry you through the inevitable obstacles.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

At ROAM Humanitarian, we are currently seeking a construction partner or sponsor for any of our upcoming construction projects. These buildings directly and immediately transform the lives of the families and communities involved.

Women’s Refuge Center, Tanzania – $120,000
This center will be a beautiful, safe haven for women and children escaping FGM (Female Genital Mutilation), child marriage, and other abuse. It will provide education, meals, clean water, business opportunities, and a refuge from harm.

Nepal Home Build (November 2026) – $12,000
ROAM is building a home for a family of four this year. The husband is disabled and unable to work, and the wife—who is the sole provider—faces immense societal challenges. Their current living situation is dire. A safe, permanent home would give their two children stability and a brighter future.

Bali Home Build (February 2026) – $8,000
This multi-generational family currently lives in a makeshift shelter inside a landfill, surrounded by garbage and toxic conditions. Providing a real home would transform their lives and the lives of future generations.

As a registered 501(c)(3), all donations are fully tax-deductible. Sponsors receive co-branded swag, high-quality photos, and project updates—perfect for social media, internal communications, or marketing materials. Please reach out to [email protected] for more information on how you can help!
