Meet Lindsay deOliveira

We recently connected with Lindsay DeOliveira and have shared our conversation below.

Lindsay, we can’t begin to explain how much we appreciate you sharing about your PPD experience, but we can say that so many in our community are suffering from or have suffered from postpartum issues including postpartum depression and so you sharing your story and how you overcame it might help someone who is going through it right now or in the future. What can you share with us about how you overcame PPD? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
Postpartum Depression and Postpartum Anxiety are two things I would never wish on anyone. I try to be as real and raw about it as possible, so that maybe someone going through it won’t feel alone. I will never forget being wheeled from the delivery room to the recovery room in the hospital, my newborn daughter in my arms, when PPD hit me like a train. The lowest feelings and the lowest thoughts consumed me. I struggled to bond with my daughter. My family knew something was wrong the moment I came home from the hospital. I had a 2 week check-up with my doctor and I was to be brutally honest. I didn’t see any other way out. I immediately started medication alongside Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to develop the skills I needed to survive. I did the hard work. I did honesty. I pushed my comfort zone little by little. I owed it to myself and my daughter to get better. I applauded my small victories, as those added up to big victories. Like many things in life, there is no quick fix or magical pill to solve PPD or PPA. I had to truly work through it and face it to make it to the other side. I encourage anyone going through that to be open with those in your trusted circle. You can face it. You can get through it. And it does get better.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a stay-at-home mom that, like most inventors, had an idea form out of their own desperation. Soothe Beginnings offers the first eco-innovative soothing system for the modern baby. The Soothe Beginnings Starter Kit has a cap and shield made of recycled paper and an eco resin. The cap can be personalized! Included are three interchangeable pacifier nipples for both breast and bottlefed babies. Most parents struggle with figuring out pacifiers like we did. The nipple shapes are based on research for quality and proper latch. *Assembled or not, no piece poses a choking hazard*. Every part is dishwasher friendly, making it so easy for new parents to keep hygienic. The line will come out with swappable teething and weaning nipples, so babyhood through toddlerhood is less stressful. To make things even MORE new parent friendly, we are offering subscription nipple replacement. We are a one-stop shop for giving your baby the best soothing experience. Soothe Beginnings will be launching in January of 2024, and pre-orders will launch ahead of that. I am a finalist in BizPitch Columbus this November and will be appearing on The Blox (Amazon Prime) this upcoming year!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Being teachable is the best possible quality an entrepreneur can have. Saying yes to networking is a close second, followed by being charismatic. You can work through anything if you have those skills in your pocket. Something you can’t quite figure out? – go to your network. Being open to networking calls has opened doors I didn’t know existed. The networking is why my business has traction to get off the ground. Stay open during these calls and meetings to learn something new. Taking lessons (being teachable) from the “no”s I have received made me so much stronger. These are all learning opportunities. If people like you, they will champion you and your company. They will want to connect you to other successful and skilled people.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The best thing my Dad ever did for me was to not spoil me. I had to earn everything in life, and I appreciate everything so much more. He was a single parent working multiple jobs to support us. He did what he had to do and what he could do. If that’s not inspiring, then I don’t know what is. That man was TOUGH on me growing up. He wanted a better life for me, but one that I had to work for myself. He is my biggest cheerleader in this venture and drives in from out of state, alongside my Stepmom, to watch my daughter so I can go to meetings. They are one of the vital pieces of Soothe Beginnings getting off the ground. I wouldn’t be ready to launch without their help. Their encouraging words and actions have meant the world to me.
