We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lindsay Knox a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lindsay, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
I have been an optimist for as long as I can remember! Growing up I had a happy childhood, despite major life events like my home being burned down in a fire and my parents divorce. I was raised to believe in resilience and hope. My parents did a wonderful job of fostering positivity through global travel, allowing me to explore my interests and artistic pursuits and via every day activities that promoted joy. I always felt the glass was half full, and at a certain point in my adolescence decided to focus on the positive, willing good things to happen. To my delight, good things came and continue to – even when things in life feel hard to overcome. My Sister loves to tell me that I live under a lucky star, but I think it’s really just me choosing to say “Yes” and trusting my intuition.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I design a line of jewelry called LADHA. In Swahili “Ladha” is synonymous with pleasure, taste and joy. As we dress ourselves our jewelry serves as “seasoning” and helps to bring out our true personality and individual style. The intent behind my designs is to promote self expression and confidence. I work in bronze and silver as well as 14 karat gold, precious gems and reclaimed diamonds. I started my business in 2019 after working under an established jeweler for several years and I have been enjoying a professional life as an entrepreneur ever since.
My jewelry is wearable and versatile, but with a handmade quality that makes it feel special. I carve most of my designs in jewelers wax by hand, and when the wax models are cast in metal the original textures, fingerprints, and organic quality are beautifully translated. For my Fine jewelry I enjoy sourcing diamonds and gemstones that catch my eye and designing around them, in order to showcase each stone’s unique qualities.
I was raised by strong, well traveled women who taught me to value and appreciate cultural aesthetics and all things artistic. I grew up admiring the many precious and wearable treasures that would later be handed down as family heirlooms. My hope is to create elegant and understated jewelry that evokes a sense of laid back luxury.
I have my e-commerce website and custom design offerings but I have recently been working hard to expand my wholesale presence and getting my line into stores across the country. I myself hope to own a brick & mortar store one day!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Aesthetic point of view. I have always been an appreciator of jewelry, and the women in my family had great taste so I had a good base for my design sense. Before starting my own business I worked as a retail buyer for larger retailers and was able to refine my point of view and design strategies when it comes to designing jewelry that appeals to a certain customer.
2. Hands on Experience. I worked under a well known local jeweler as I was finishing my metal smithing education and training. This was invaluable when it comes to understanding not only how to make jewelry but also how to run a small business. I witnessed and absorbed so much during that time.
3. The power of marketing. Whether showing up at an in person craft fair or trade show, posting on Instagram or designing a website with branded elements – Marketing is crucial and I have really put a lot of effort and thought into how I show up with my brand.
My advice is to leverage your community, learn as much as you can by other’s examples and tap into the resources that are at your disposal. Take someone out for coffee, ask them for referrals if you need help from vendors, find a job where you can get paid to learn what you want to do.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
I am constantly trying to improve my relationship and handling of money. I grew up without much financial education and like many Millenials have had to learn and re-learn good financial practices. Now that I run a business my personal financial tendencies can directly impact my business operations. Cash flow and budgeting continue to be my biggest challenges – and I am constantly working to undo my poor habits, improve upon my systems and understanding of healthy small business finance.
