Meet Lindsay Meyers

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lindsay Meyers. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Lindsay , so great to have you on the platform. There’s so much we want to ask you, but let’s start with the topic of self-care. Do you do anything for self-care and if so, do you think it’s had a meaningful impact on your effectiveness?
I think this is something that many people struggle with in today’s culture, including myself. But in a way, I am in an industry of self care! If I don’t practice it myself, if makes it hard for me to encourage people to make their health a priority when it comes to exercise and nutrition. Self-care for myself includes working out of course, in particular lifting weights. I think no matter who you are (even as a fitness professional), there are times in life where you may have a lull in exercise and activity. I can tell you for certain that when I’ve experienced those times in life I feel worse physically and am mentally foggy, just not at my best overall. I am far more effective in my job when I keep exercise regular, get proper sleep and nutrition. We also have an fantastic massage therapist at Optima, Cat Colonna, who I see myself for massage therapy. If I ever have any aches and pains she sets me straight. I’d also consider spending time outside and with my animals self-care, as that is something I enjoy most in life.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I own an operate Optima Fitness Studio in Denton, TX, a private personal training studio. But what I really do is change people’s lives for the better. That might be a bold statement, but nobody is every sorry they’ve exercised or gotten stronger. At Optima we focus on health, wellness and fitness as a whole, and it’s probably one of the most rewarding jobs anyone could ask for. What makes it so exciting and special is seeing and hearing about the changes people are experiences in their lives as a result of exercise. Being able to lift what they once couldn’t in daily activities, going on a hike on vacation they never imagined they could do, being able to play with their grandkids and live an active lifestyle to experience fullness in life they had been missing out on. The list is endless, but these are the things we strive for and it is so exciting to see individuals transform their lives.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
To start, most definitely having knowledge of the human body and how it functions. Being able to work with and around injuries requires experience and knowledge and I wouldn’t be able to help some of the people I’ve worked with without it. Having grit, and that may be the case for any business owner. Meaning being able to set goals and work hard to achieve them, no matter the obstacle. I think you have to be resilient as there are may ups and downs in any small business, and being passionate about something enough to stick with it when times get difficult is a necessity. Having empathy toward others, being able to understand where they are feeling and coming from is huge.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
The biggest obstacle I’m facing currently is time. Being able to fit everyone into the schedule so that they can be as consistent as possible. It’s a great challenge to have, but we are currently looking for another trainer to add to our team!
