Meet Lindsay Shaver

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lindsay Shaver. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lindsay below.

Lindsay, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?

I definitely accredit my mother, who was a single mother with multiple jobs, trying to keep everything afloat. Seeing that growing up, showed me that you have to work for the things you want, and its not always easy. I’ve had to rely on myself since a young age, which also encouraged my work ethic. There was no ‘fall back plan’, it was me, myself, & I – if I didn’t make it work, no one else could. So I guess that work ethic grew by force a bit, haha

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

My name is Lindsay Shaver (aka Lindsay Skulls), I own several small businesses that include brick & mortar, online, & expo/pop-up style vending. I am a very hands on owner, doing everything from helping customers, to website updates, to accounting. I wear many hats, but a few of my favorites are being a buyer, merchandiser, and designer. I’m currently spending most of the year on the road traveling to various expos & events across the country, showcasing my brands. It’s a new experience, and I’m learning a lot, meeting many new people, and growing brand awareness nationally.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Consistency, Education, & Ambition. Without those 3 things, I would be lost. Ambition for being able to constantly keep going, to keep learning, keep building, keep focusing…it takes a lot of drive to build a business & succeed, especially in today’s world. The slogan of ‘Build it & they will come’ is archaic, and that’s where the consistency comes in to play. Being consistent, and constant is important today, in the age of scrolling and very short attention spans. Education, it’s crucial to keep learning, educating yourself, and this doesn’t mean just going to school. I personally did not like school, and I used ‘unconventional methods’ like the internet, reading, you tube videos, talking to other business owners, watching like minded individuals – there are many ways, and without the walls of formal school, the options are endless! You can find what learning method works best for you & your personality. Keep doing, keep dreaming, keep learning – just Keep Going!

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

When things tend to be to much, I think it’s important to take a step back, and just be. Sometimes we need a moment to gather our clarity & refocus. For me, I like to go to vast open spaces (like the beach, or the desert), for the reminder of how small we really are in this universe. Nature does wonders for the mind, and can help get you some clarity. After that, I like to make itemized lists to help organize my thoughts on paper. Something about seeing words written down can change the way you think of them. I think its helpful to add prioritizing things to these lists – tackle the time sensitive things first.
Find what works for you, but I suggest this method: Breathe, go to your ‘happy place’, think, write down thoughts, then Do.
