We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lindsay Walters. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lindsay below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Lindsay with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I’ve always been someone who is extremely goal oriented, I have always been focused on doing the best in every aspect of my life. I’m also someone who likes to REALLY live life; I don’t like to sleep in, I don’t like to sit at home on the couch (often). I really like to fill my days with meaningful activity. I would say my work ethic has been continuously building all my life as I increased my responsibilities. In high school I was focused on getting good grades and also on competing at a high level in track and field, then I picked up jobs on the side and also I started competing in the off seasons. Fast forward to college and I had all the same responsibilities, I was in school working to complete 5 years of school in 4 years, I was on a division 1 track team, I had a job (sometimes two) and then I started doing nails. When you’re juggling so many responsibilities, I found you have to be motivated to succeed in each aspect or things will fall off. My work ethic really thrived in college because I was passionate about all of the hats I was wearing and motivated to succeed in each aspect! To me that’s all it takes. Consistency, passion, and the motivation to succeed.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a press on nail artist and nail influencer. So my main offer is custom press ons, but recently I’ve been really interested in teaching. I do not have a teaching license so I can’t offer classes for compensation, instead I have been posting tutorials on how to do the hard steps for all the sets I’ve been putting out. My unofficial slogan is “All girlboss, no gatekeep” because truly there is room for all of us at the top. Doing nails is something that saved me during a rough point in my life, if I can help motivate or teach someone to find the joy in doing nail art as well, that’s a big win for me!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Consistency, passion, and intrinsic motivation. It’s easy to sit on my high horse right now and say “be intrinsically motivated” when I frequently get thousands of likes on my posts. But up until a few months ago, it was just me and a few hundred likes here and there. You have to learn to love your work without the social media fame or likes and praise from others before you’re ready to put your work out there. Secondly is consistency. I see a lot of smaller artists wondering why they aren’t seeing success, but they only post 2 times a week or so. I post 6-7 times a week, this is between 15 and 30 hours of work including content creation, editing, recording, voice overs, doing my nails, engaging with my audience, and working on orders. It’s no small commitment. There is nothing “lucky” about where I am in the industry, it’s a product of consistent work for years. Lastly is passion. I think this one speaks for itself. I truly believe when people LOVE what they do, it really does show.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Sometimes I do find myself overwhelmed by content creation and nail orders. I have a full time job outside of my nail endeavors so sometimes it is really hard after a 9 hour shift to turn around and do an addition 4-5 hours of nail work. I just try to tap into that intrinsic motivation and remember that this is all adding up in the long run and will pay off. I try to take things one nail at a time, focus on the task I am doing and NOTHING else. One by one, inevitably the nails get done and I get into bed and the sun rises the next day to do it all over again!
