Meet Lindsey Jamison

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lindsey Jamison. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lindsey below.

Hi Lindsey, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

I have always been a creative and initially realized my passion for interior design through DIY projects. I found the power of paint and how it can change a room, furniture piece, art, or built-in areas of a home. I started recreating wallpaper patterns that I loved through paint, realizing it is easier to paint over when I would change my mind (often) vs. wallpaper removal. I would work with fabric scraps recreating wall murals. For example, I created a headboard look for my daughter’s room of a colorful house with modern funky patterns and even added wood details on the chimney! This is how it began, simply by creating.

My husband was in the Marine Corps which meant that we moved a lot! Through the years, we moved 12 different times, I always had a new space to recreate. I was always drawn to the worst house on the block, which makes for the best renovation and most challenging design aspects. This is where I realized creativity doesn’t “turn off”. It’s always part of me. Whether walking into a restaurant and thinking how this space could better function or staying at a hotel and wondering why they would pick that wallpaper.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I am a partner/lead interior designer at Rumor Designs in Steamboat Springs, CO. We are an interior design firm that specializes in new construction, home renovations, and commercial spaces.

No client and project are ever the same. This is what keeps it interesting. You may have clients who like the same style but the challenge is how can I recreate this look that everyone wants to achieve and make it unique for this client. For example, clients come to us for a Mountain Modern look and that sheepskin fur chair that has been floating around Pinterest! Let’s achieve this look but make it special for this family but adding a funky wallpaper or matching it with a midcentury-style chair, etc.

We have a talented team of 6 lead designers. Our support staff includes an order manager, an in-house bookkeeper, and warehouse staff. Rumor Design also has an incredible showroom called RD Home along with a cafe. RD Home is a showroom with a great mix of furniture, home decor, accessories, and one-of-a-kind items. I source vintage items from all over, hand-picking vintage glassware, trays, barware, furniture, and pieces that pair well with our modern-style furniture. There is something for everyone and the showroom never looks the same! We also think of RD Home as a design center for our mountain town. We have cabinetry lines, tile, and flooring displays as well. It’s a one-stop shop if you’re renovating, building a new home, or just looking for a gift. The coffee shop is a nice amenity to provide for shoppers. We provide coffee drinks, wine, and beer. You can come in for a beer and leave with a sofa!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

1. Manifest, put that energy into the universe, and keep moving forward. Take the classes, do the work, and follow other designers. Learn what you like and what you don’t. What works for you may not work for others. Try new things. Become that person.

2. Be persistent + don’t give up. When I moved to Steamboat Springs, I knew Rumor Design was where I was supposed to be. I was lucky to eventually become a partner and share my vision and passion with an incredible team. If you know what you want, don’t give up. Find out what sets you apart from everyone else. Focus on your strengths and work on your weaknesses. Remember that failing is all part of the game. If you don’t get the job or your first design review with a client you’ve worked so hard on is a bust, that’s okay. It’s all a learning process and keep going. You will look back with a “remember that one time” story.

3. Listening- Great listening skills are one of the most important life skills. Listen to your teachers and mentors. They have the experience and reasoning that go beyond your knowledge. Listen to your team. Rumor Design is successful because of the team aspect. Unique individuals from different parts of the country, with different backgrounds, experiences, and views on design make it a success. Your way is not the only way, listen to others. Listen to your clients. You may think you know exactly what they want or need in their home but the end result is their home! I believe less talking to fill the quiet and more listening is key.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?

It’s not a negative thing, but our workload can be a bit overwhelming. We ask our clients to be patient during the design process as we are working through our lead list. During Covid, people came rushing to the mountain towns to get out of the big cities. They could work from home. Steamboat is growing with more families moving to town which means more homes and more work. Which is a good thing! In a small town, we have a small labor pool and we’re all doing our best to keep up! Steamboat has become the second-largest ski resort in the nation, next to Vail. This has resulted in an increase in second homeowners, which means more work, longer lead times, etc. Steamboat has definitely become a destination spot for summers and winters. We want to deliver the best service to our clients!
