We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lindsey Mclaughlin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lindsey, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I believe my purpose, although it has evolved over time, revealed itself to me naturally. Art has always been an integral part of who I am. Throughout the various stages of my life, my forms of artistic expression have changed significantly. I’ve been fortunate enough to explore a wide range of mediums during my formative years and into college. My college experience particularly expanded my horizons, allowing me to experiment with sculpture, pottery, jewelry-making, and glass-blowing. However, the one constant throughout my journey has been painting, which I ultimately focused on for my degree in Fine Arts.
After earning my Bachelor’s degree, I transitioned into a role as a Visual Merchandiser, where I had the opportunity to create remarkable window displays. After a few fulfilling years, I felt ready for a new direction. I became intrigued by a new medium, and my paintbrush shifted from canvas to faces. I was fortunate to be hired by a renowned makeup brand that provided me with the space to learn and grow. My first experience doing wedding makeup is a memory I’ll always cherish—I was on cloud nine for weeks afterward! I discovered a passion for enhancing natural beauty in an elegant way, and I loved the vibrant energy that filled the room during these special occasions. That moment marked the realization of my true purpose. I am a lover of love and deeply appreciate the unique beauty present in everyone. That first wedding was 12 years ago, and my passion for this craft has only intensified since then.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
As a bridal makeup artist and esthetician, my primary focus is on enhancing the natural beauty of my clients on one of the most significant days of their lives. I carefully tailor my approach to each individual, ensuring that their makeup not only complements their features but also reflects their personal style and the emotions of the day.
What makes my work particularly special is the intimate connection I build with each bride. I get to be a part of their wedding journey, helping them feel confident and radiant as they prepare to walk down the aisle. The artistry of makeup combined with my skills in esthetics allows me to not just create a beautiful look but also promote healthy, glowing skin, which is essential for that perfect finish.
Moreover, the joy and excitement in the air on a wedding day are truly contagious. Being surrounded by love and happiness while helping my clients look and feel their best makes every moment of my work incredibly rewarding. It’s a privilege to witness the transformations and to contribute to such an unforgettable experience in their lives.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
In my journey as a bridal makeup artist and esthetician, three key elements have profoundly shaped my path. My Fine Arts education has not only honed my artistic skills but also provided me with a deep appreciation for color and composition, allowing me to enhance each bride’s natural beauty. The ability to truly connect with my clients is vital; by understanding their desires and the bigger picture of their wedding day, I can create personalized looks that resonate with their vision and make them feel radiant. Lastly, my commitment to efficiency ensures that everything flows seamlessly, allowing my clients to savor every precious moment. Together, these qualities empower me to transform not just appearances, but experiences, making each wedding day unforgettable.
How would you describe your ideal client?
My ideal client is truly anyone who values the artistry and care I bring to their special day. However, I especially love working with clients who trust my expertise. For my long-time clients, simply knowing what they are wearing is often enough; they have faith in my vision and style, allowing me to create a look that enhances their beauty effortlessly. I also cherish the opportunity to work with clients who don’t wear makeup regularly. Helping them navigate this experience and providing a comfortable, enjoyable process is incredibly fulfilling for me. It’s a joy to empower these clients, boost their confidence, and make them feel beautiful on a day that’s all about love and celebration.
