We were lucky to catch up with Lindsey Rubino recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lindsey , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I love this question because I think oftentimes we get bogged down by society telling us “you have to find your ONE true purpose” – your 1 job, your 1 role, your 1 “thing” that gives meaning to this world… and I disagree! I think it’s important – especially if you’re in an often challenging and here today, gone tomorrow line of work like being an actor as I am – that you’re not putting all your eggs in 1 basket. So many people who do so wind up riding such high highs while working on set followed by periods of extremely low lows in-between bookings, where a lot of days they don’t even feel they have a reason to get out of bed in the morning. THAT’s why I feel so lucky to get to do what I do! When I bought out my company (The Princess Party, LLC) from its previous owner over a decade ago, I was confident it’d scratch the performing itch since when I do parties myself it’s essentially an acting gig (plus I’m able to keep my singing voice in shape!), all while serving a worthwhile purpose that’s near and dear to my heart – bringing joy to children and their families. Getting to employ my actor friends and provide them with creative gigs where they can flex that muscle too (vs waitressing or other traditional actor-friendly part-time work) is another fulfilling piece, which makes me feel like I’m providing a service for the SoCal Performing Arts Community that’s so near and dear to my heart. Now that we have a Princess Party branch not only in Los Angeles but San Diego and Orange County too, that twofold mission of making children’s dreams come true while providing artists with a safe, fun space to do what they do best is what keeps ME going. And the best part is, even when I book a TV/Film role and have periods of weeks or even months where I’m off filming, I’m still able to keep parties afloat thanks to my band of princesses and superheroes, no matter where in the world I may actually be! So this is my encouragement to all you actors, singers and artists out there to find something that can keep your valuable skills utilized till the next time you get that big booking – hey, maybe even contact theprincessparty.com and I’ll hire ya myself! 😉
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I actually feel like I totally answered this one with my first response, but let me know if you’d like me to expound on anything! 🙂
But I will add that as an actress, this year I’ve already had the pleasure of getting to appear in an episode of Starz’ soon-to-be released drama “The Hunting Wives” opposite Malin Akerman, and am currently filming “The Runardounds” (which recently got picked up by Amazon), where you’ll find my character Mandy Antuna in at least 3 episodes.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Mine are pretty plain and simple – first, and most importantly, NEVER GIVE UP. Acting is a unique beast of an industry where you’re seldom climbing any corporate ladder or just paying your dues till you get to the mailroom till you get to someone’s desk till you get promoted etc, etc. You NEVER KNOW which room you walk into that could be the one to change your life “overnight” after years of grinding. So rather than ever taking not getting that 1 gig or that 1 agent dropping you as a sign the problem is you and you should just quit, PIVOT. Constantly reevaluate, and make necessary changes based on what is and isn’t working. Early on in my career I was fortunate to get into a certain niche commercially thanks to my experience as a world-famous USC Song Girl where I booked national commercial after national commercial as a cheerleader for mega-brands like Taco Bell, Metro PCS, Chevy, Verizon, and beyond. During a certain period though, despite my face being plastered all over TV, opportunities just completely stalled. When my Manager and I talked to my commercial reps they gave a pretty nondescript response like “oh yeah something doesn’t seem to be clicking, so maybe you need to start from square 1 and take a bunch of commercial acting classes so you can figure out what the problem is and improve.” Now not that there’s anything wrong with sharpening your skills (I highly recommend it in fact!), but something didn’t sit right given all my recent booking success, so I decided to leave arguably the biggest commercial agency in Los Angeles and partner with a boutique agent who seemed to completely buy what I was sellin’. And guess what? Within weeks I’d booked a massive Virgin Mobile campaign appearing in multiple commercials and billboards all over the world followed by a big Fabletics commercial and beyond. So, DON’T SETTLE for the status quo. DON’T THINK that just because an authority figure (agent/manager/boss/whoever) says maybe it’s you and your talent that it is. Oftentimes it’s THEM – they get completely bogged down by an overly padded roster, their relationship with a big casting director changes, or they just flat out aren’t working that hard for you anymore. So please keep questioning, keep transitioning and keep trying new things, new people, new doors, cause sometimes it only takes ONE rep to make the difference between an Emmy or yet another time playing “Nice Rack Girl” (cough, cough, not that I’m speaking from personal experience). 😉
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’m always looking for new creatives to join The Princess Party team! Whether you’re a performer (actor/singer) and interested in leading parties, a web designer or graphic designer who could lend your expertise to our website and marketing materials, or a photographer looking to shoot a bunch of pretty princesses HA, we always love getting connected to new top talent!
