Meet Lindsey Van Rennes

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lindsey Van Rennes a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Lindsey, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?

I was born into a family of entrepreneurs and go getters. My grandparents and parents always had their own businesses growing up. I spent a lot of time going to work with them. So from an early age I learned that if I wanted something, I was going to have to go out and get it. I was raised to be self sufficient and independent! I’m thankful my family instilled that in me!

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I started out in the hair industry in 2011, and at the time I was not totally sure of where I wanted to go with it. After working in a few different types of salons, I got the chance to open up my own! I decided that I wanted to specialize in cutting hair, specifically men’s grooming and short hair. So in 2015 I opened my own spot “Stay Sharp”. Since then I have been extremely blessed to be a big part of the community. My clients are like family to me and that has made all the difference! I recently expanded and moved to a larger location, not far from the original shop. I have a great team working with me now and it has just been amazing!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

When owning your own business you have to have discipline! It isn’t always easy but staying disciplined and having the drive to be successful is definitely a must! Also being able to find the work-life balance is important. My advice for people starting out on their own is to not give up, stay focused but also remember why you started out in the first place!

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

Talking with other business owners, especially in the hair industry has been very helpful for me along the way. Having a good support system of people who can relate and understand is so important! But I will say my family has been number one in helping me through this journey!
