We were lucky to catch up with Lisa Doll recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lisa, so great to have you with us and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the community. So, let’s jump into something that stops so many people from going after their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. We’d love to hear about how you dealt with that and persisted on your path.
The irony is your “Haters” are really your biggest fans. Sure, they may want to see your demise and usurp whatever they feel you have and they don’t, but it really comes down to that. You have something they feel they don’t, or you are someone they want to be. The fact they are so focused on those points, means they won’t achieve the validation or goals they want because they need to look inward, not outward. If you’re looking outward and only at what others have and you don’t with no inward plan for personal development or strong work ethic, you become your own worst enemy. Haters feel threatened. Your shine makes them feel dull and they want to pull you down for it. It’s not about you, it’s about them and their low vibes and low self esteem that causes them to be envious instead of inspired. Understanding this helps me to have empathy and compassion for the inner turmoil people like that experience, but doesn’t mean I need to give them access to me or the time of day. If you feel solid in yourself and what you’re doing, haters are just noise to ignore and distance yourself from.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a multidisciplinary artist that specializes in Tattoo & Permanent Makeup services in Ellicott City, MD. I create magical tattoos for magical people as well as expertly applied natural looking permanent makeup such as brows, eyeliner, and lips. I love adorning people with art and beauty enhancements to bring some of our inner world to the exterior of who we are, our perceptions, values, and what inspires us. I tell my client’s stories through permanent art on their skin with a whimsical illustrative style. I’m focusing a lot this year on making more art prints and products based on my work and excited to see where it may go!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Best thing is to know exactly what you want. This often takes failure to get there. If you’re someone who has ambition and specific goals in mind for your life, the best skill you can develop is how to react to adversity and failure and be able to not lead by ego. I’ve always felt failure was a chance to learn and improve and not a ‘red letter’ or ending just because I hit a road block. Life is a constant learning experience. When you come across opportunities for growth, you need to take it by the horns!
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
I became an octopus that had all eight arms doing something different and was burnt out. This made me realize I needed to drastically reprioritize my professional and personal life. I did a lot of “Do I ACTUALLY enjoy doing this? Is this giving me something tangible and positive in return? If not, it has to go!”
