We recently connected with Lisa Ferrel and have shared our conversation below.
Lisa, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Focusing on my strengths was the first step. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses, and crochet is one of the things in which I excel. Seek out honest feedback. I have met some wonderful designers at trade shows and online. Through collaborations with them, I have learned more about my craft and also about marketing my designs.
Set realistic goals. Although there are many designers who are much more successful than myself, I cannot compare myself to them. That would set myself up for failure by setting unrealistic goals.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Crochet is my passion, and I feel very fortunate that I have been able to turn it into a career. I love to travel to new cities and buy local yarn to create something new. This year I have released 2 ebooks – Crochet a Rainbow and Pretty Pink Patterns. I am so proud of these designs.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
My first craft was sewing, and I believe that skill has significantly helped me with designing items in crochet. Learning to use a circular knitting machine has expanded my repertoire and allowed me to publish a wider variety of designs.
Although I learned to knit before I learned to crochet, I am not as adept at it. I’m working on it, though. Next month I will publish my second knitting pattern.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Collaborations have become a large part of my business. I love collaborating with other designers, bloggers, yarn dyers, etc.
