Meet Lisa Garrett

We recently connected with Lisa Garrett and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Lisa, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.

I believe that our focus has the power to shape our reality. That’s why I make it a priority to keep my mindset and emotions positive. By staying grounded in gratitude and intentionally focusing on the good, I invite more light, joy, and abundance into my life.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Hi, I’m Lisa Garrett, a passionate photographer based in beautiful Sedona, Arizona. While I shoot just about everything and run four different photography businesses, my main focus is outdoor portrait photography—capturing stunning moments against Sedona’s iconic red rock landscapes.

I love incorporating the natural beauty of the scenery into every portrait and encouraging women to dress up, feel confident, and truly shine. My editing style is bold and colorful, and I love mixing dramatic, posed shots with natural, candid moments to create a rich, dynamic gallery.

I photograph weddings, elopements, families, engagements, maternity, senior portraits, branding sessions, girls’ trips, and surprise proposals right here in Sedona. Many of my sessions take place in exotic, adventurous locations, some of which require hiking or careful planning to access.

In addition to outdoor work, I also offer newborn and headshot sessions through my mobile studio setup, bringing professional lighting and backdrops directly to your home or office.

Whether you’re celebrating a milestone or just want to feel amazing in front of the camera, I’m here to help you capture it beautifully!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Because I shoot outdoors so often, I’ve developed a strong understanding of natural lighting, which is absolutely essential in photography. Lighting can make or break an image—just showing up with a professional camera isn’t enough. Knowing how to read the sun, adjust for changing conditions, and use light creatively is what truly brings a photo to life.

When I photograph weddings, I always visit the venue in advance to track the sun’s path throughout the day. This helps me plan where key moments should take place, ensuring the best light for every part of the celebration. Thoughtful planning allows me to customize the photography experience for each couple, and knowing where and when people should be positioned is crucial to capturing beautiful, flattering portraits.

I’m currently expanding my skills by learning Sony gear, while still actively shooting with Nikon. Each camera system offers different advantages, and I’m diving deep into both so I can choose the right setup for each specific shoot. It’s a big investment—both financially and mentally—but I believe that understanding multiple systems gives me greater flexibility and precision. Every brand, camera body, and lens has its own strengths, and I love discovering how each tool helps me bring a creative vision to life.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

I eat chocolate. That fixes everything.
