Meet Lisa Goforth

We recently connected with Lisa Goforth and have shared our conversation below.

Lisa , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

When I turned 50, I knew my season was changing. I had been out of the workforce home educating my children for 15 years. I have always been a creative, but it looked different when my kids were younger. I was decorating for parties or sewing for my daughter, but when I painted a table and resold it on Facebook marketplace I thought to myself, “This is something I can do.” My daughter was still in high school, but I could go out to the garage and work on projects in between subjects. Things quickly snowballed and within a few months I formed an LLC for my business. About a year into my business, I started a YouTube channel and it has grown tremendously. Patience, time, and willingness to learn new skills has helped me find a new purpose in my second act of life.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I formed Ivy Lane Interiors in March of 2022. My main focus at the time was refinishing furniture, but as I learned new skills I began sharing tips and tutorials on my Instagram page it eventually led me to start a YouTube channel. I love to share tips and techniques as well as the business side of refinishing. I’ve also been able to expand into doable DIY and outdoor projects.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I think three of the most important qualities, skills, and/or areas of knowledge are:
1. Be a life long learner. There are new skills you can learn, new technologies, new ways of doing things that can continually expand your business and circle of influence.
2. Patience. Things don’t happen overnight. Having the patience to stick with something even when it’s hard, can be your secret to success.
3. Be gracious. Kindness to yourself and those around you goes a long way. Recognize that mean comments on social media might be coming from a person who is hurt or bitter. Graciousness to yourself might mean taking some time off and maybe not taking things or yourself so seriously.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?

My biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months has been in technology. I’ve learned to shoot video, edit long form content, add graphics and overlays, make thumbnails, write descriptions for SEO, etc. It’s been a lot to learn for a Gen x-er, but I love tech and I love learning new things. It’s been a stretch, but I think it’s important to learn the skills before you hire someone else because you will have a good grasp of realistic expectations when you do finally hire out some of those tasks.
