Meet Lisa Hoeg

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lisa Hoeg. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Lisa, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I feel I get my work ethic from my dad. He always worked extra hard and pushed himself more and more in order to create a better life for his family. I vowed to never put family over my work, however his passion for us to do better has been instilled in me. So because of what I watched and how I grew up, I decided to always push forward. While I’m not taking the money over my family, I have dedicated myself to showing my children they can have what they want as long as they work hard. I hope my sons grow up to respect a woman who may love her work or career. I hope my daughter works hard and does not rely on others.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I had been tempted to get a cricut for a long while and finally decided to. With it I began making cups. Finally I started to dabble in clothes. I had many people encourage me to sell them so O decided to give it a shot. Sure enough, my shirts were well received. My daughter helped me pick my store name, Shirtsbytheway. She loved helping by making videos, and my boys love to watch me create things. Since I began, I started making pillow cases, aprons, and many other things. However, I primarily stick to shirts (baby clothes are my favorite). I impressed myself how well my business has done considering I primarily work on word of mouth. I do hope to expand into sublimation, to take my shirts to the next level and be more permanent.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Work ethic is definitely a quality you need. It takes a lot to start up a business. Simply having a dream or goal is not enough. It takes passion, patience, and dedication.

You definitely need to develop a knowledge on business, marketing, and how social media works. Without these three things, or someone with this knowledge, it will be hard to get your brand moving. For myself, I spent months researching, reading, and then constantly shifting what I did as I watched trends.

Finally, you need a growth mindset. This comes from my teacher side. In order to succeed you have to remember you may fail. But that doesn’t mean you should give up. You have to keep growing, pushing forward, and stay positive. Self reflection can help a lot with developing a growth mindset.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
There are a few people in my life who have helped me to develop my skills and brand. From those who encouraged me, to those who follow and spread the word. However, I will have to say the cliched response that my husband has been the most helpful in overcoming challenges. He has helped support me, backed me up, taken care of our kids while I work, and prioritizes me and my dreams. I couldn’t ask for a better person to help me build the life I want for our kids.
