Hi Lisa, really appreciate you joining us to talk about a really relevant, albeit unfortunate topic – layoffs and getting fired. Can you talk to us about your experience and how you overcame being let go?
I have been a nurse since 1986. Unfortunately, to my dismay the company I had been working for many years went out of business laying all employees off. At the time of the layoff I was doing event planning/decorating part-time. In the immediate aftermath of loosing my job I had to take time to decompress, and not make any big decisions. I had to take time to process what had happened. Then the pandemic occurred which made my job search next to impossible to get hired anywhere. After getting a handle on things, and doing a financial assessment of where I stood, I had to focus on keeping my anxiety and stress in check. I began to think about what my future may hold. The remedy was to surround myself with positive-minded people who encouraged me, and helped me move forward. They reminded me of my past accomplishments and achievements, and gave me good ideas and advise about what to do next.
I then decided to launch my event planning business to a full-time status. I have been going strong moving forward taking my business to the next level by expanding my business to Los Angeles, California and Dallas, Texas and traveling to various other states as well doing events. I have kept my nursing license in an active status in the event I need to go back to the healthcare workforce.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three areas of knowledge that has been most impactful in my journey has been I pray, I stay in my own lane, and I’m not competing with nobody except for myself, and I always have a positive mindset believing I will always win no matter what the situation may be.
It is such a fulfilling feeling to know that my passion for events is inspiring my clients. I had to figure out what I was passionate about, master it, and stay in my own lane. I have grown tremendously to trust the process, and have learned to be patient. I am so grateful the pieces are finally coming together of my puzzle. The main ingredient is LOVE. I truly LOVE what I do!! Being able to bless my clients with a phenomenal event gives me satisfaction.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client is one who is very open to communicate with, takes direction well, comes to the table with ideas of their own, upfront with what their budget will be to bring their vision to life, give you their full trust, and openly appreciate your time, skills, and knowledge as the Event Planner.
