Meet Lisa Liu

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lisa Liu a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Lisa, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
My parents have such a massive impact on me. Witnessing their drive to have a fulfilling, successful life, entering their 86 and 89th years in this realm, has shaped my view of life. We lead purpose-driven lives. I wake up each morning with gratitude for my surroundings- my incredibly loving, talented, beautiful man and my sweet, cuddly pup. I remind myself of my purpose before I jump out of bed: to love and honor my family, and to live to my fullest human potential.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My career is in a constant state of evolution. New connections, opportunities, and experiences that are slightly scary are exciting to me. As soon as I was able to see myself as a whole person, not as just a violinist, the world opened up to me. As a violinist living between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, I’ve recorded on over 300 TV shows/movies and albums. As an orchestra contractor, I get to meet new musicians from all parts of the world. Recently, I’ve focused my attention on conducting, music directing and composing. As a producer and entreprenuer, my partners and I are currently building shows-from orchestra concerts to immersive/interactive experiences featuring famous visual artists and major stars. My partner, Mitch Henson, and I have also developed a patent-pending cannabis tincture that is formulated to help patients deal with pain and sleep challenges. It’s an extraordinary life, and I’m so grateful to my family, friends and partners.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I have 3 degrees from The Juilliard School as a violinist, and none of the 9 years spent there helped me figure out how to thrive in the real world. The essential qualities I attribute to my success (thanks to my parents, of course): 1. Sheer determination
2. Accountability
3. Discernment

Sheer determination: Be grateful for your failures and losses. They teach you. They’re opportunities for a fresh start. They’re guide posts that tell you what you need to do or where to go. No matter what happens, as my Dad says, “Do not dwell.” Get back up, try a new approach as many times as necessary, focus ONLY on what you want. Keep going until you reach your target, and as soon as you do, make a new one. Do not become complacent-always keep moving forward. If you’re not passionate about your path enough to push through the inevitable obstacles, then that’s not the right path.

Accountability: No one will care about you, your health, career, finances, etc. as much as you do. When I realized that I, alone, determine how I feel, I became free. My partner and I became stronger and closer. How can you learn or evolve if you’re always blaming the external world for your limitations? Need to be healthier? Put in the time and work out. Need more money in the bank? Develop new skills. Want to elevate your career? Contribute to others, shine, be excellent.

Discernment: I wish I could tell my younger self to find better friends and to surround myself with inspirational, successful, healthy role models. We all let our minds become bombarded with sheer noise from social media, colleagues, “news”, friends.
When someone tries to give you advice on finances- are they wealthy?
When someone tells you what to eat- are they healthy and fit?
When someones tells you how to live- are they happy and fulfilled?
When someone comments on your personal life- are they in love and in a healthy, thriving relationship?
Even experts can be misleading, misinformed, and outdated. Observe the person you are talking to- if they’re not modeling the very thing they are advising you on…smile and walk away. Set boundaries.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My parents instilled in me an unwavering belief in myself. That belief gives me all the power I need to achieve anything I focus on. Regularly, they tell me how proud they are of me, how much they love me, how thankful they are for our family and health, how proud they are of their own achievements. We live a blissful existence, and I am eternally grateful to them for giving me this life.
