Meet Lisa McConnell

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lisa McConnell. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Lisa , so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we don’t have words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Overcoming imposter syndrome is definitely a challenge. It’s still a present struggle at times, especially being in such a fast paced line of business.

Surrounding yourself with only positive support is a must and so helpful along with the constant reflecting back on all of my accomplishments and on how far I’ve come in such a short amount of time. That has helped me tremendously. The connections I’ve made, places I’ve been and the experiences I’ve had all lead back to me and my perseverance as a small business owner.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m Lisa, the sole owner and creator behind Boss Babe Balloon Co LLC. After doing balloon decor privately for years I decided to open up my services to the public April of 2022. With an overwhelming response from the KC community and beyond that affirmed I definitely made the right choice! I left the corporate world in Dec 2022 and have not looked back and have zero regrets! For now I am a one-woman show, with the occasional help during my busy seasons. Hoping to very soon in the future have a permanent part time assistant!

My love for hosting and creating over the top decor for events was the drive I needed to start my own business and doing what I enjoy. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing my clients reactions to what I have created for them and bringing their vision to life!

Balloons signify to me happiness and fun. Sharing that with others is the best feeling, life’s too short to be serious all the time!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three areas of knowledge would be:

BE OPEN: I can’t stress this enough. You have to go into this with an open mind! You have to be willing to learning new things even if you think you don’t. You do!! Constructive criticism is your best friend. It’s the only way you can keep improving.

RESEARCH: it’s a lot of work and time. But you will be better off for it. Learning how to navigate and understand what it takes to create a brand and business from the ground up is very satisfying when you know you’ve invested what it takes to have the knowledge to be successful all on your own!

Perseverance: I have the mind set that at the end of the day failure is not an option. I want to make this work, so I’m GOING to make it work. There are plenty of times I question my sanity and what I’m doing. But when you are passionate and believe in yourself, all else will prevail!

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
I’d defintely have to say all the amazing vendors in the Kansas City community who have welcomed me with open arms and have been so supportive of my business. Some have become my closest friends and support system. They are always willing to be there to listen and give perspective and a helping hand.

Of course my husband and family who have stood by me during the late nights, early mornings, and are always there to lend a hand even if it’s the craziest request! I’m very lucky to have an amazing village that is willing to support my dream!
