Meet Lisa Meddin

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lisa Meddin. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Lisa, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

As a Jewish woman, resilience is in my DNA. My great-grandparents immigrated from eastern Europe, Poland and Russia to escape anti-semitism and build a better life for their families. They overcame the challenges of immigration and assimilation into society in the Deep South and I often think of their strength, adaptability and resilience when dealing with challenges or difficult situations in work and life.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I used to identify as a landscape designer, but now I proudly say I “own a landscape design company.” Over the past few years, I’ve built Harmony Design Northwest by hiring and collaborating with other landscape designers, allowing me to increase revenue and grow the business while achieving a better work-life balance.
My joy comes from connection—whether with people, animals, or nature. Designing beautiful outdoor spaces allows me to create that connection by inviting people to experience and enjoy their space in new and innovative ways.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Three key qualities have been most impactful in my journey: adaptability, relationship-building, and strategic delegation.

Adaptability – The ability to pivot and evolve has been crucial in building my business. From rebranding Harmony Design Northwest after moving from Williamsburg, VA to Portland, OR to learning how to automate client management – every stage of growth required me to embrace change rather than resist it. My advice for those starting out: Stay open to new ways of doing things. The landscape of any industry shifts, and adaptability is a crucial skill for success.

Relationship-Building – My business thrives on trust and dependability. Clients choose Harmony Design Northwest not just for great designs, but because they feel heard, understood, and supported. My advice: Focus on people as much as you do on your craft. Take the time to listen to clients, collaborate with colleagues, and nurture a strong professional network. Authentic relationships lead to loyal clients and valuable opportunities.

Strategic Delegation – Learning to delegate was a game-changer. For years, I worked independently, doing all the design work as well as running the business. Hiring talented subcontractors and automating systems and client communications allowed me to increase my business while working less. My advice: Don’t try to do everything yourself. Identify what truly needs your expertise and where others can support you. The sooner you let go of control in the right areas, the faster your business can grow.

For those in the beginning stages of your journey, stay flexible, invest in relationships, and don’t be afraid to build a team. Success isn’t about doing more—it’s about doing what matters most.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?

The most impactful thing my parents did for me was support my dreams, even when they were unlikely to come true. My first love was acting, and despite the challenges of the industry, they never discouraged me. They funded my bachelor’s degree in theatre at the University of Washington and a post-degree private acting school, giving me every opportunity to pursue my passion.

I always knew they would have preferred I choose a more stable and profitable career. But what amazes me is that they never pressured me to give up acting. Instead, they let me walk my path, allowing me to either succeed as an actress or come to my own decision to move on. Their unwavering support gave me the confidence to take risks and, ultimately, the freedom to shape my future.
