Meet Lisa Morgan

We were lucky to catch up with Lisa Morgan recently and have shared our conversation below.

Lisa, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

I get my resilience from not being afraid to fail. I do a lot of things when I am most afraid. Failure is a huge part of success. My parents have inspired me to be fearless. My mother followed her dream and opened a high end clothing boutique after working in high fashion shops. Unfortunately, the big earthquake in San Francisco caused her to close after the building was no longer stable. My father was a professional baseball player who had to overcome obstacles because of his small stature and also because of his skin color. He played in the 60s and 70s. I credit my daughter as my motivation to pick myself up. She is watching and I want her to be able to pick herself up when she falls. As a single mother, I have mastered redirecting what I think are failures. My daughter used to write me notes on post its for inspiration. I have them taped on my mirror to remind myself to keep going. I love that she wrote them in cursive and was just learning how to write in this style, which is a lost art in schools. I have had the most amazing village get me to where I am now. I couldn’t have done it without them! I have to say, I have met some incredible people in my 39 years in the makeup industry. It has been a very important part of my journey. It’s amazing how you can power through anything when you have the support and cheerleaders that I have in my corner.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I am in my 39th year as a makeup artist. As I look back on my career, I feel I have done the things I set out to do. I wanted to end as a Journeyman and I recently finished my certification for it. I love my job as a makeup artist because it has aligned me with lots of talented people in the industry. I am a great networker and it has paid off. I used to hate networking, but realized, I love meeting new people and talking to EVERYONE on set. I love to learn from the most experienced makeup artist to the new one in the business. Sharing ideas, tips, and tricks of the trade have been the best for me. I love to mentor other artist and try to help them in a business that can be hard to get ahead. I remember starting out and asking lots of questions. I was lucky that people were willing to answer them. I make sure I pay it forward. You will never have an answer if you don’t ask the question. I have my own company of custom lipglosses that I started during the pandemic. It was a tribute to my dad who passed away. His wish for me was to have my own brand. I am currently working on a new formulation for my glosses. Ultimately, I would love for my daughter to take over and grow the business. I want her to have a head start in entrepreneurship. My latest goal would be to expand my ownership in property. Maybe I will buy a big building and grow my empire…”Every dream begins with a dreamer”- unknown

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Fearless, determination, honesty are the qualities that were most impactful in my journey.

I always advise people starting out to do your research on what you are trying to do. Focus on it daily, even if its for a few minutes. Don’t let people discourage you! Sometimes, people can’t believe in you when they’ve never believed in themselves. There is no such thing as a dream too big or it wouldn’t be considered a dream. Align yourself with people who are doing what you are aspiring to be. Follow them on social media and learn from them. Always be professional! Stay true to who you are. I love clothes, anything sparkly and leopard print. I am not a very conservative person, especially in my wardrobe. I love fashion! I used to worry about what other’s thought. I have learned to only worry about how I feel. So, when you see me on set with all my sparkles and leopard print, you will be happy to know, I am in a good place in my life!

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?

The most impactful thing my parents have done for me: they gave me life and love….sorry, that’s two things.
