We were lucky to catch up with Lisa Vasquez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lisa, you’ve got such an interesting story, but before we jump into that, let’s first talk about a topic near and dear to us – generosity. We think success, happiness and wellbeing depends on authentic generosity and empathy and so we’d love to hear about how you become such a generous person – where do you think your generosity comes from?
My generosity comes from wanting everyone to have a moment to shine. You don’t have to win everything, but you can have your moment in the spotlight. By doing this, others have a chance to feel validated, and we get a chance to see different ideas, cultures, and points of view. Being open to learning as a community is the way to turn ideas into change for the better.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I have the pleasure of waking up every single day and surrounding myself with art of every kind. As the editor-in-chief of a magazine, I collect the stories of creators, interviewing them to uncover their unique experiences, and then sharing those stories with the rest of the world. The way I like to describe it is having my own art gallery, where I curate every exhibit and rearrange or feature them at will.
Our first issue went straight to best-seller, and we are currently working on the second issue, which I expect will do the same.
The bonus is the podcast I host, in which many of the interviews can be watched and heard.
Humans and stories have been intertwined since the dawn of time. It’s a connection through an invisible thread holding us together. We are timeless because stories tell of the past, and ideas create the future.
I write because of this love and to learn how to cope with things that aren’t always positive. If I cannot explore what makes us dark, then I cannot have hope for the light.
Being an artist is simply another tool to tell stories where words may fail.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Being creative is perhaps the most obvious quality and skill required for doing what I do. Expanding on creativity, it’s the drive to ask, “How can I be better at this?”
When you have a passion—for example, let’s use cars—you want to learn everything about them, from models and engines to performance. Writing and creating art is no different.
My advice to others who want to do what I do is to be uncomfortable and break out of your cocoon. If you don’t, you’ll always be trapped.
To develop your skills, seek feedback on your work and be open to constructive criticism. Practice daily and never give up just because it’s not “the best” or it’s not “as pretty” as you think it should be. Be open to failing a lot. It’s where you’ll learn the most.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
One of the biggest obstacles for any new business when it comes to sales and profit is marketing and exposure. We are no different. It takes time, dedication, consistency, and being fearless and adaptable.
We have an amazing partner in Joe Myndhart at Crystal Lake Publishing. He has been instrumental in giving us everything we need to succeed. Now, it’s up to us.
