We recently connected with Lisen Helander and have shared our conversation below.
Lisen, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
First, I had to take a step back and build a healthy foundation without anything else fueling my worth but my authentic self. To be more clear, stepping back from alcohol fueled time off catapulted me into where I had been looking to be for years. Who knew that a substance I thought was helping me was keeping me low and having the opposite effect?
This in turn transferred into a new purpose – what DO you do without the alcohol to ‘enhance’ a time and place? It’s tough work. It’s easy to go back to old ways. It’s easy to engage in that next alcoholic drink with others.
Why not go the hard route? Why not test these waters? Why not think and drink different, problem or not? Why not put health, clarity and natural high first? We have no idea how our bodies are designed to feel by constantly putting dopamine distractions in front of us.
Building the Friday Mind allowed me to see that putting a non-alcoholic thoughtfully curated glass in front of me gave me the same giddy feeling that that first glass of alcohol also offered, minus the extreme highs and lows. Again, it’s not easy. It’s tough to stay on that road when the majority do not. Abnormal drinking has been normalized and I am simply here to help normalize all drinking, all spirits, regardless of their alcoholic content.
Choosing to imbibe in all the brilliant non-alcoholic options has given me the edge and clarity to be at my best everyday, to show up for myself and others, to continue to grow and learn and realize those little joys are where life is at. I am proud of where I have been and who I have become, from alcohol fueled memories to non, it’s about learning who YOU are to build and conquer that confidence and self esteem. It all matters.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
The Friday Mind started by me finding a bigger purpose – beyond checking out from alcohol and out of my authentic mind. This started by reviewing establishments and promoting those with the most thoughtful of drink menus – equal alcohol and alcohol free options. What if we truly all drink? Some chose to add alcoholic spirits and some non.
After one year, I’ve grown the Friday Mind into a holistic coaching practice. After all, it’s not just about looking at alcohol and your relationship with it. It’s also about your whole being: mind, body and spirit. It’s about moving from coping, healing to thriving in this present moment.
If this resonates with you and you want to work on your relationship with alcohol from the inside out, contact me for a free discovery call: info@thefridaymind.com
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. You have to leave what others think at the door. 2. You can’t please anyone but YOU.
3. Taking the best care of you is in turn the best thing you can give back to the universe.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
Dopamine Nation by Dr. Anna Lembke – to increase my learning in an area that has harmed our nation, but is not talked about and has inspired me to keep moving forward to help and serve others.
