Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Liset Garcia. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Liset, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
Optimism comes from a family and group of friends that lends themselves to helping me achieve my goals. I have surrounded myself with individuals that accept good or bad outcomes and remain humble and optimistic for a better tomorrow. It’s also easier to be optimistic when the people around you see challenge as an opportunity for change or redirection to a realm that might not have been imagined had the challenge not occurred.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Hi, my name is Liset Garcia and I went from pursuing a career in Healthcare to full blown Flower Farmer. I was born and raised in South Central Los Angeles and now live in a rural town in Fresno County named Reedley (known as the Fruit Basket of the World). I’m daughter to Oaxacan Parents, whom I have to thank for laying the foundation of what I now call “Sweet Girl Farms”. Sweet Girl Farms is the name of my farm stand business, a farm market, that’s open year-round, where I sell fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers, herbs, honey and other products that are grown by our family and surrounding farmers.
Our 20 acre farm has lots of peaches, pluots, persimmons, grapes, pomegranates, flowers, tomatoes, chilis, peppers, and herbs. I’ve personally have worked really hard to adapt a regenerative approach to be more resilient during droughts and the ever changing fluctuations in temperatures. My goal is to grow healthy flowers and nutritious produce by first prioritizing the health of our soil.
We sell our products exclusively at our farm stand, but will occasionally participate in local Festivals or pop-up events. My family and I have worked really hard to have families our farm stand, so that our community gets to know where there food comes from. We love having our farm stand showcase the beauty of eating directly from our family farm and we hope to have you visit!
Here’s a list of what to expect each season so that you can plan your trip:
Spring: Leafy greens, herbs, and the first flowers start to come in.
Summer: grapes, peaches, plums, watermelons, tomatoes, peppers, vibrant flowers
Fall: pumpkins, pomegranates, apples, persimmons, fall bouquets, marigolds
Winter: citrus, roasted peanuts, pomegranate juice (super popular), jams & jellies
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1)Looking back it was imperative to loose the fear of judgement. Loosing the fear helped me catapult a social media presence that has helped spread the word about our business in our local community.
2) Getting involved in our local community events has been the best promotional tool. The more City Council meetings, Chamber of Commerce events, and presentations to local non-profits, the more our name is promoted and we’ve became a household name.
3) Collaborating with local businesses has also been crucial to our growth. Joining forces with long standing businesses has introduced us to new customer segmentations we were missing.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Yes! We always welcome new ways to collaborate and build either a more niche community or a wider community for people to get introduced into our farming world. We would like to grow our flower business, so if you are a creative that loves florals, would like to host a photo op at our farm stand for our customers to enjoy, or like to play with florals, please reach out to us!
