Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lisette Devia. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lisette, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
As a young Latina opening your independently owned pharmacy, you’re already navigating challenges that require a combination of resilience ,adaptability, and strong vision. Being the only one in the room who looks like you can sometimes feel isolating, but it also offers a unique opportunity to break barriers and redefine what success looks like.
I have been able to:
Embrace my unique perspective.
My experiences and understanding of diverse communities have allowed me to connect with a broader customer base and offer services that others may overlook.
Confidence in my knowledge, professional skills, and in the quality of the service I offer are key to overcoming any feelings of being an outsider.
Building a strong support system that encourage and empower women and people of color in business.
I’m learning how to advocate for myself. This includes negotiating with vendors, securing financing and representing my pharmacy in professional settings. Practicing clear and assertive communication to take out any fear in using my voice.
As a business owner, especially in healthcare, my ability to adapt, learn and keep evolving are key.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I have been a Pharmacist since 2009. I’ve worked in various retail and independent settings. I’ve dreamed of opening my own pharmacy. But every time I thought about it, fear would hold me back. The uncertainty, the financial risks, and the challenges of running my own business seemed overwhelming. I kept telling myself I wasn’t ready yet, that I needed more experience or that there was always a better time.
But eventually, I realized that I would never feel 100% ready, and the fear would always be there unless I took the leap. So, I made the decision to take the risk and open my own pharmacy. It wasn’t easy, but I knew it was the only way I could make my dream a reality.
Now, about five months into running my own independent pharmacy, I feel incredibly grateful for how much Ive grown in such short time. Every day brings new challenges and opportunities to learn, but it’s been so rewarding to see my hard work starting to pay off. My business is growing, and I’m building stronger connections with my community and customers.
It hasn’t been easy, but I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished, and excited for what the future holds.
We are looking to expand our services through delivery to service the nearby airport hotels and bring travelers a fast and peace of relief when in need of pharmacy services..

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Resilience, Courage, and Commitment to service are the most impactful in my journey that I am still going through.
The advice I can give and one that I still tell myself, is to keep moving forward. Learn from failures and adapt. Have courage, especially with the significant financial and emotional investment and the uncertainty that comes with entrepreneurship. Face the fears and trust yourself. Finally, the commitment of providing high-quality care and personalized service. This dedication makes a positive impact to build the foundation to help you stand out and grow, both in terms of customer loyalty and business success.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
I write down my thoughts. I list what I can control and what I cannot control . From there I can devise a plan. I also take time for myself. I workout and spend time with my dog. It helps me clear my mind and come back refreshed.
