We recently connected with Lisha Liang and have shared our conversation below.
Lisha, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
As an artist, I think that creativity is not static, but constantly evolving with the accumulation of time and experience.
First, record the changes in my own thinking. I like to draw inspiration from different fields – not just art, but also literature, music, science, and even philosophy. Sometimes, a book, a piece of music, or a philosophical paper will suddenly inspire me to explore a certain creative method. This interdisciplinary way of thinking helps me break the limitations of thinking and produce more in-depth and broad creations.
Secondly, I also pay attention to the connection with people. My artistic creation focuses on social propositions. No one is an island in society. When I have time, I will visit art exhibitions or participate in international art events. I can learn a lot from communicating with different artists.
Finally, maintain the stability and balance between creation and life.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, Italy. My work encompasses performance, installation, sculpture, video, photography, painting, and more.
My artistic focus is on gender issues and the perpetuation of gender-based violence, topics that have become increasingly important to me and have led me to become an active participant in feminist discourse. Through my artistic research I extend and delve into issues such as sex education and domestic violence. I believe that contemporary art reflects society’s questions: what can we do to make tomorrow a better day? How can we make people aware of the issues that affect our collective experience? Then, based on my empirical observations of the surrounding reality, I emphasise on gender issues, especially those related to domestic violence and sex education. She uses her artwork as a reflective mirror, capturing and expressing first-hand experiences as well as narratives shared by others. Using a mix of traditional techniques such as photography, performance and installation, as well as cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence and augmented reality, I create works that are both interactive and contemplative. Positioned between experience and consumption, I seek to activate a search for meaning through my work, aiming for universality in my message. Through this approach I seek to provoke dialogue and reflection on the themes I explore, inviting viewers to engage deeply with my art and its wider implications.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Constant innovation, perseverance and adaptation have had a huge impact on my personal artistic and life journey. They not only shape my identity as an artist, but also my attitude and way of thinking about life and work.
Firstly, innovation is an important thing, and continuous innovation is adding one more step to every small step, which will bring very surprising growth.
Secondly, stick to your convictions but be flexible. In the process, constantly reflect on yourself and understand yourself. Emotional management and patience are very important.
Finally, follow your passion and make bold decisions.
Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
I am deeply constructing my theoretical knowledge system as an artist, and to this end I am currently in a doctoral program. My artistic research project is about the study of women’s interactive narratives. I hope all goes well with the project.
