We were lucky to catch up with Lissa Dee recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lissa, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
My unwavering optimism is deeply rooted in the journey I’ve undertaken as a singer-songwriter. Reflecting on myself evolving from intimate shows of 10 – 20 people, to audiences numbering in the hundreds, I’ve not only gained confidence but also invaluable knowledge. The very essence of my optimism lies in my personal growth and the continuous unfolding of new opportunities.
Witnessing the progression in my artistry fuels my optimism, and each opened door serves as a testament to the boundless potential within the music industry. I wholeheartedly believe no dream is too grand, a belief fortified by the diverse avenues through which I’ve secured gig opportunities, interviews, radio placement, and more.
Maintaining an optimistic outlook extends beyond seizing opportunities; it perseveres even in the face of setbacks. I’ve cultivated the ability to stay positive through missed chances, recognizing that each experience contributes to my growth. Acknowledging that perfection is a journey, not a destination and I may just not have been ready for the gig or opportunity I was hoping for.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
As a singer/songwriter and recording artist, every song I create is a soul-searching journey. Each lyric is a fragment of my heart, and sometimes, it’s in the act of dissecting the song that I fully understand which piece of my soul I’ve bared. The process is a revelation, an intimate unraveling of emotions that adds an element of mystery to my creative journey.
The most exciting moments come when I learn that my songs have inspired or offered solace to others. I also love gathering friends and allowing them to create shared memories at my shows.
However, beyond the music, it’s a personal mission to inspire, particularly. young women. I want to be more than a singer; I aspire to be a voice that resonates with their struggles and triumphs, fostering a message of confidence and self-love. In the coming year, I will be collaborating with a mental health facility for young women, an endeavor that intertwines my music with a commitment to emotional well-being. I am super excited to be a bigger part of my community and spread my love for wellness and music.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
3 qualities that were most impactful were confidence, image and drive. These 3 qualities have helped me so much in my music journey.
Confidence is extremely important not only when performing, but also merely reaching out booking agents, or speaking to anyone and everyone in a CONFIDENT way about myself and my music. I can dive a lot into this one, but the more confident you are in every aspect of your life, the more people will take you seriously,
Image isn’t just about looking the part; it’s a deliberate choice to express who I am. Every outfit I wear on stage or in those crucial moments with industry figures is carefully selected. It’s my way of saying that I value presentation, not just for showmanship but as a reflection of my commitment to self-care and well-being. This attention to image isn’t about conformity; it’s a personal statement about how I choose to present myself to the world.
Drive, for me, is more than just ambition; it’s a visceral passion that fuels my every endeavor. It’s the burning desire to not just be heard but to be recognized for the dedication I bring to my craft. I’ve come to realize that this sense of drive, this genuine love for what I do, resonates with others and earns not just their attention but their respect.
In the end, confidence, image, and drive aren’t just checkboxes on a list; they’re the very essence of my artistic identity. They’ve shaped the way I present myself to the world and how I navigate the intricate web of the music industry. These qualities aren’t just tools; they’re an intimate part of my journey, each contributing to the story I tell through my music.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
Throughout my journey, I’ve been fortunate to work with many voice teachers and coaches, each contributing to the evolution of my confidence and drive. Among these mentors, Taylin Rae stands out as an extraordinary one, leaving an indelible mark on my life.
Taylin Rae isn’t a teacher; she’s a remarkable mentor and a beacon of positivity. Her influence extends beyond vocal techniques; she has been a guiding light, inspiring me to navigate the paths of my musical odyssey. Taylin has generously shared her wealth of knowledge, not only in the nuances of singing but also in the complexities of the music industry. Her insights have been instrumental in helping me dissect the very core of my songwriting, bringing clarity to the emotions and stories woven into each composition.
I count myself truly blessed to have her in my life, someone I can lean on as I navigate the challenges of this artistic path. Her impact goes beyond the studio; it resonates in the very fabric of my artistic identity, shaping not just how I sing but how I perceive and express myself through music.
