Meet Lissa Ziranek

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lissa Ziranek. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lissa below.

Lissa, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.

Confidence and self esteem have always been a challenge for me. I was a shy child, not often speaking up in class. I came out of my shell a little as I grew older but it wasn’t until I found success in my business (my third self-owned business) that I felt a full and complete inner confidence.
I had sewing skills from a young age, studied fashion design but I always felt a domestic quality to sewing. The design was always what I thought I needed to make a career out of.

Once my business took off, I experienced the skills I had in a completely different light. Sewing was valuable. Sewing was empowering. And there was so much demand. People of all ages, all genders, from so many backgrounds were filling seats in my studio. And I had so much to offer. This was the first time I feel I had real purpose in my career, and it felt good.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

Moving Thread was started in 2019 in a home based studio. In April 2022, it moved to its current location on West Washington Blvd.

We are an intimate sewing studio offering high quality services and plenty of individual attention. We cater to all ages, all genders and all levels, our doors are wide open.

Learning how to make clothes can be a lifelong journey. We start with introductory workshops and beginner sewing series. After that you can choose from a variety of classes such as pant making, dress making, pattern making, quilting, mending and alterations, hand sewing and embellishments, bikini making, shirts, etc. and we offer private classes if desired. We also started hosting kids fashion camps last summer which so far have been a total hit!

If you take a class with us, we hope that you will continue to sew at home. But if not, we hope you will at least walk away with this…
Learning to sew is a way for us to have a stronger relationship with the clothes we buy and wear, a way for us to have respect for the people who make our clothes, a way to give our clothes a longer life and for us to be more mindful of where our clothes end up after the life we share with them.
Because LOVED CLOTHES LAST, and our planet needs more people on its side.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Sewing has been a big part of my life since I was a child. It was my creative outlet, it was explorative and experimental. I couldn’t imagine a life without it.
#1 practical skill

Starting your own business is scary and takes time to develop and orchestrate. You need to be patient but you also need to give yourself the time and space to try. If you’re really passionate about something you’ll find a way to make it happen. But be prepared to shift gears a long the way.
#2 don’t be scared to try things

After starting a family, my priority was to start a business that worked comfortably around my personal life. I’ve definitely had my moments of working long days and late nights while getting it off the ground but it has paid off and the reward is feeling equal success as a business owner and as a mother. I know that balance is hard to find.
#3 creating the lifestyle YOU want

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

I always have my eyes and ears out for sewing creatives. We already have a great team but I’m always looking for ways to increase the student experience and have more variety of workshops on offer.
