Meet LiSun Goh

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to LiSun Goh. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

LiSun, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

I think my current purpose is making people feel beautiful right now. I was a late bloomer starting my makeup career, but when I realized it was my true calling, I dove in head first. I continue to grow my business by improving my skills doing makeup, YUMI lash lifts, personal makeup shopping and private makeup lessons for cis and trans women.

It started with my love for makeup and skincare when I was very young. I never wanted to do makeup as a career, but my mum encouraged me to do this because she knew it was my calling. Both my mum and birth mum were makeup artists back in the day, so it’s safe to say that it was in my blood! Eventually, I went to Blanche Macdonald Center, Canada’s top makeup school. After graduating, I started my makeup journey in the TV/Film/Commercial industry while building my own business and moving to the USA.

I realized that helping people feel confident in their own skin was what truly inspired me to continue on this path. I love doing makeup on them. Eventually, I started offering YUMI lash lifts, personal makeup shopping and 1:1 lessons for beginners.

I’ve invested in ongoing education and training specific to skin-focused makeup, and continuous learning and adapting have also helped me stay true to my purpose in the industry.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

Hi, I’m LiSun, owner of LiSun Goh Beauty. I’m a makeup artist and beautician.

I have been a makeup artist for over 10 years, starting in TV/Film/Commercial in Vancouver BC where I grew up. I moved to Seattle in the summer of 2015 after I married an American, and started my own business as a freelance makeup artist.

My makeup philosophy is creating a personalized look that enhances your natural features. By focusing on your face and bone structure, I provide you with a look that feels natural and builds confidence. I strive to tailor your look so that it is classic and timeless. During my makeup lessons, I share tips, tricks, and techniques that are easy to follow and make your daily makeup routine a breeze.

How did I find my makeup style? – I found my makeup style early on by experimenting and discovering what made me feel the most confident and comfortable. I loved to enhance and highlight specific facial features, such as my eyes, and keeping everything else more natural. This makeup felt more natural and allowed my true beauty to shine through, rather than covering my face with thick, cakey foundation and heavy eye makeup.
Through my journey, I discovered that many people also shared my preference for a lighter, more focused makeup application that accentuates their best features without feeling heavy. By listening to my clients and understanding their needs, I refined my style to create looks highlighting their natural beauty and enhancing individual features, aligning with what they were looking for.

Offering personal makeup shopping and makeup lessons to beginners – women and transitioning women- has been such a huge reward for me. Playing a part in helping someone feel confident with their makeup skills in a safe, secure, and comfortable learning environment gives me a deep sense of fulfilment, making me feel like I’m on the right path.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

1. Willingness to Experiment with Makeup Products: There are so many different makeup brands and products out on the market, and they all work differently. Taking the time to experiment to see how the products work together, their colours and undertones and discovering new techniques with certain products is crucial in developing my makeup style and speed. I can’t carry every single colour or item with me, so I need to be able to think on the spot by mixing and becoming familiar with what I carry in my professional makeup kit.

2. Business Knowledge: Understanding the business side of running the business was crucial. Learning about marketing, promoting yourself, SEO, client management and financial planning helped me build a sustainable career and grow my brand.

3. Listening and Feedback: Learning how to listen and taking feedback from my clients and peers without getting hurt or defensive was essential. It allowed me to improve myself, my makeup skills, and meet my clients’ needs more effectively by building strong, trusting relationships with them.

My advice is to be humble and learn everything, be a sponge and absorb everything without judgment.

Tell us what your ideal client would be like?

My ideal wedding client is someone who rarely wears makeup but appreciates a skilled makeup artist. They aspire to look like a more polished, radiant, photo-ready version of themselves and sees their wedding makeup as an investment in timeless memories that will be cherished.

For my personal makeup shopping and makeup lesson clients, it’s anyone who is a beginner at makeup or wants to refine their makeup skills. I know that stepping into a makeup store can be overwhelming and trying to learn from watching YouTube is confusing, so I really want my clients to feel at ease when they’re with me.
