We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Litsie Monier a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Litsie , thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
most of my creativity come from conversation. either conversation with family, friends, partner,… what i mean by conversation could be an how are you or an how is your mom doing, what’s her jobs. lot of it comes also from people watching, and actuality. Just living or the concept of living keeps my creativity alive. and the way it usually cross from idea to art would be by playing
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Litsie Monier. I am 21 years old and a professional dancer and choreographer. I was born in France and moved after my high school at 18 to study and improve in dance in New York City.
During my years in France, I had the chance to participate in competitions and received the title of French Champion of Jazz Dance in 2018. I then left my city to move to Rouen and enter the Conservatory of Rouen and Jeanne D’arc high school following an intensive program specially designed for musicians and dancers.
At the end of High school, I went to New York City alone, without speaking English. I joined the International Dance School of Peridance and studied there for 2 years before graduating in June 2023. During these two years of studies but also 3 years of projects, creation and professionalization in the USA. I had the opportunity to create my own projects and be present at international festivals such as Ladies Of HipHop Festival for the opening of the annual battle,… I also to joined dance companies like Choreojoey, the neighbors, Dancers Unlimited and tours with them in the United States. I am currently in the process of creating my company and we are working hard on a new choreographic piece and the construction of a unique repertoire inspired by my life and origine from France and my the Bolivian folklore that I grew up dancing, and moved by house, hiphop and waacking, . I have to say that moving to New York changed my vision of dance, I meet the street and club dance style and felt in love with it, it make me started to freestyle, battle, to drill, to jam…
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
i was always a big dreamer, which made any idea of goal doable. Manifesting my goals was really essential in my journey. I would also said that I am a worker. I have also preferred stayed home to rehearse, dance, trained again and again. It was hard but fully worth it. It is also important to know who are your supports, where can you take energy from. the people that are giving you energy versus the people that are taking your energy. it is truly important to know these while going through this journey of yours.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
Honestly a lot of persons have made a huge impact on my life in different way of course. I could not name one person in particular. My parents have always been a real support to me, from day 1. They have pushed me to be better while supporting me. But really the teachers I had or schools directors especially in dance all have teached me life lessons, just by listening to their own life story. truly all of them are examples for me, and inspirations to overcome challenges.
