Meet Liv Clements

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Liv Clements a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Liv, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?

A big thing I learned was that you will be the most confident person in the room if you walk in already thinking it. It is not easy to be infront of a camera all the time and have to put a smile on your face. Sometimes I would wake up and not have a good hair, feel nervous about my work but regardless when I walked in I knew it came down to me to perform. I gained my self confidence and self esteem from believing in myself. I needed to tell myself I am going to be okay, everything will workout. There was a point in my life where I felt like I lost a lot of my confidence and it did relay on the camera. It came down to me saying to myself, “Its time to do better, put the work into yourself.”

If you put the work into you, and focus on you, all the confidence in the world will come with it.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am a Big Ten Network and Indiana University Sports Reporter. I do everything from interview the top athletes in college, host shows for Indiana University and do sideline reporting during games. I have covered football, basketball, softball, waterpolo and everything in between. The most special thing about it is being able to tell the stories of athletes that people don’t see. I have been able to gain so many relationships and amazing connections with athletes. Its not all about the sport it’s about who is apart of it. I feel so lucky to be able to tell there stories everyday. I had the privilege to cover the Indiana University Football team during there amazing season and playoff run. I also had the privilege to interview some of the top basketball players playing in this seasons Big Ten Tournament. This job never gets boring and i’m so lucky to do it.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

For me the three big skills I owe a lot of my success too is dont compare yourself to anyone else but be competitive. What I mean by that is simply focus on your work and your skills. Be your biggest critique and everyones journey will be different. But be competitive, because the world is talented, so you must keep up and stand out. It is important to learn from your peers. Another thing is say yes to everything you are offered. This is saying yes to meetings, networking and opportunities. Know your worth when it comes to opportunities but look at the good in every single one. You truly never know what good and other opportunities can come from it. And my last one is, more of a skill, be professional. This little skill can be something that makes you stand out over so many people. This is from how you present yourself, following up with people, writing in correct form. This is all so important when it comes to how I navigated my journey.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

Being overwhelmed is such a weird feeling. For me I get stressed when im overwhelmed because it feels like my world is a genuine hot mess. But on the other hand I love it because it means to me im doing something right if my plate is full. I struggle more when I am bored, when I find myself with nothing to do. I love working. But there is a key balance. When I do get overwhelmed I find myself needing to just stop and take a break. I have everything I need to do in categories so I see whats important and what can wait. I also make sure I only take things day by day, and only look a week in the future. Thats been so important to me so I make sure I dont get overwhelmed. The bright side of this feeling is that you are doing something right, you are working hard and your plate is full.
