Meet Liz Atchley

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Liz Atchley. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Liz , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?

I get my work ethic through life itself. There are so many different things I want to experience. I want to be a talented designer, I want to travel, I want to learn how to sail, I want to live life like one big vacation. I recognize that to be able to make these things happen, I’m going to need to work hard to save up my money and give myself a name. The motivation to reach my goals pushes me to succeed within my career.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I am a graphic designer with a niche in brand/product identity. I am currently a senior at the Savannah College of Art and Design, and will be graduating in May with BFA in Graphic Design. What is so special about my career path to me is seeing my designs come to life. I’ve grown up around graphic design – my parents own their own company – but while being at school I found my passion. During a graphic design class, I had to physically print a cereal box design. At first I thought it was silly and a waste of time. But after the project came together I realized how much I loved seeing my design off of a computer screen. From there is how I found my niche in brand identity. I especially love product identity, and have a wide portfolio of beverage brand design and other products. My favorite part of all this is being able to create a story for a brand. Every product on the shelf has a brand story if you look hard enough. It has personal qualities which make it it’s own. I love being able to do that.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

I think the three most impactful things in my journey was being in a creative environment from when I born, possessing motivation and drive, and being lifted up by others.

I was born into a creative family, with my mother being a graphic designer and my father being a landscape architect. This fostered my own creativity growing up.

I’ve always been a motivated person. If there is something that doesn’t make me happy, instead of being upset about it I always try my best to problem solve and find some sort of solution. The same goes for my goals and rewards. I work hard to reach these because I know the outcome and rewards will pay off.

My biggest source of motivation is surrounding myself with people who will lift me up, not pull me down.

For folks who are early in their journey, my advice would be don’t back down. If things get hard, and they will, don’t stop there. Find a solution; problem solve. Because though it may seem like the ideal situation might not happen, usually it’s because there is something better you just haven’t seen or thought of yet.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?

My biggest challenge right now is that I’m feeling a little stir crazy. At this point there’s a part of me that just wants to drop everything I’ve worked for and hit the road. I’m so eager to get out and explore the world. I love design, but there’s such a huge part of me that wants to travel and expand my horizon, but the time isn’t right me for currently. If anything this just pushes me to succeed even more in my career field. I know that I will have the opportunity to explore within the near future, and I will have more opportunities if I have a good job and income under my belt.
