We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Liz Martin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Liz, so great to have you on the platform. There’s so much we want to ask you, but let’s start with the topic of self-care. Do you do anything for self-care and if so, do you think it’s had a meaningful impact on your effectiveness?
The only way for me to be an effective healer is to have a regular self-care routine. In order to properly care for anyone I have to care for myself first. Most of the practices I utilize I learned from my studies in Reusi Dat Ton; a self-care system that is the basis Thai massage was built from. It consists of meditation, dynamic exercises, self-massage, poses, breathing exercises, mantras, and visualization. I also spend time connecting with nature which is where I feel most supported and nurtured. The key is to develop a sustainable practice and do it daily so that when life gets rough you can lean on your practice to get you through. The most transformative daily meditation I use is metta. It is the practice of cultivating unconditional love and goodwill towards all beings. In a metta meditation one sends love to themselves first before offering love to others.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’ve been working as an intuitive healer for 20 years. I recently moved my business, Third Eye Thai, to downtown Overland Park inside Awakening Illumination Healing Collective. My main focus as a healer is Thai massage and Reiki energy healing, but I’m also currently taking courses with Sacred Earth Arts in Herbalism and Shamanism. As part of my curriculum I spend many hours in the forest connecting with the plants, animals, and energies around me. Spending time in nature and re-forming a relationship with the Earth has awakened a lot of creative energy that was dormant inside me for years. I’ve been drawing, painting, sculpting, making fairy gardens, and finding more ways to connect with nature and disconnect from the digital world.
My current series, Tiny Treasures, is a collection of acrylic paintings on paint samples. The name of the paint inspires the paintings; some literal, others whimsical. It combines my childhood love of crayon and nail polish names with my love of nature. I’m also working on installing a Free Little Art Gallery outside Awakening Illumination to be a place people can come for inspiration and connection. I think what people crave most right now is genuine connection, so that is what I try to offer through my art and through my healing work. Come see me & my art at Pagans in the Park 9/13/25 10am-5pm Macken Park, North Kansas City, MO, or Her Hands Holiday Market 12/7/25-12/8/25 11am-6pm Nirvana Coffee & Games, Independence, MO.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Forgiveness: A solid forgiveness practice will set you free. I was taught a Hawaiian forgiveness practice, Ho’oponopno, early in my studies but until I used it daily I didn’t understand it’s power. I’m Sorry, Please Forgive Me, Thank You, I Love You. Repeat it until you believe it in your core. It can be used for forgiveness towards others but the practice starts towards you first underscoring the importance of self-care.
Trust: Trusting that the Universe has my back. Always listening to my intuition and honoring the answers. Life doesn’t always give me what I want, but I always get what I need. My mentor once told me, “Be careful what you wish for because you might just get it and more.” Trust that it is coming in divine timing.
Love: Love is all you need. It’s where everything begins and where it all ends. So in between why not love myself unconditionally? If I don’t, who will? The love I put into myself is reflected back to me so the more I create the more I receive and the more capacity I have to offer love to others.
It is because I have a solid meditation practice that I was able to develop these qualities. Meditation allows me to use my intuition to connect within and co-create with the Universe. My advice is to keep a strong relationship with the Earth. Nature speaks to those who listen.
Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
As a wife and mother family is the most important thing to me. I would spend my time living the same way I do now. Focusing on my family, spending time in nature, creating art, practicing Thai massage, going to concerts, traveling with friends, soaking up sunrises and sunsets, and manifesting double rainbows in between! I am living the life of my dreams and doing things that make my soul happy and I feel grateful every day! I try to live life fully and not hold back because no one knows how long they have left to live.
