We recently connected with Lizbeth Hita-Chavez and have shared our conversation below.
Lizbeth , so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Due to the lack of preparation in some Hair Schools and constant changes in hair trends, most of us, starting and stablished hair stylist, feel imposter syndrome at some point. For me, daily preparation and perfecting my technique has helped me overcome it. At the bigining of my career, I would have clients ask me for cuts or color that I had never done and because I was new, I would impulsively say yes. For the most part, the results were not always bad ,howeve I would feel horrible during the process because I was not fully knolageble. Now, I have simple system that helps me prevent just that. The sistem consist of asking all clients through my booking system for current pictures of their hair, inspiration pictures and a small description of what they would like to get done. If it’s something I have never done, I let them know and share ideas of similar styles with techniquws I am comfortable with. Doing this before the guest comes into the salon helps me prevent anxiety or imposter syndrome but it also helps clients see sincerity in our consultation. Another major part of the system is specialicing in one area before trying to be good at everything. Specialties like extentions, lived in cuts, or blonding will nerrow down the material to study and help bring the right clients to your chair. Currently, I find my confidence in the results my guest receive through their hair services and how often they come back to my chair and when new trends come out I like to practice as much as I can before trying it on a guest. Small steps like these keep me honest and prevent me from feeling inadequate in my career.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Hi babes! My name is Liz and I am a Texture and Holistic Color Specialist.
I’ve been doing hair for 14 years and I’ve been serving the Knoxville comunity for 3 . My passion for texture and holistic practeses has evolve over the years with the hope to help women understand their texture and fall in love with it.
I am working on two big projects at the moment, one of them being the reopening of my hair studio in Knoxville, TN. This year was very hard on us since I had to close for the better part of the year and do pop-ups while I figuered out what would be the best for our brand. Today, I am making a comback and hope to be fully working at the Ritual Hair Studio onece again by the end of August 2023. My second project is the lauch of my product brand, Mulix (MU-LEE-SH). Mulix is an indearment name in the Nauguatl lenguage that translates to “person with culy hair.” This brand means the world to me, I have been working with an amzing team to formulate and source out sustainable ingrediants, our chemist is a women of color who understands the needs of wavy, curly and wavy people. Our hope is to develop a product that serves the curly comunity well and is sutainable for the consumer. We wish to schive this by having fill up stations where the consumer gets to refill the product when bringing back their container. Lastly, a portion of our ingrediants is sourced by a group of indigenus women in Mexico and 10 % of all our sales go towards this comunity. Our product will be able to purchace Mulix at Ritual Hair Studio big reopening and online.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three qualities that have been most impactful to my journey are Vision, Determination, and Faith. As you start your journey keep your Vision/Reason very clear and refer to it every step of the way. A vision in place will help you make decisions and stay determined. Determination is the vehicle that will take you closer to your vision but when things get difficult your faith will maintain you. To me, my faith is is rooted in my vision and every decision I’ve made it reflects it. if you are reading this do not be discourage if your journey gets tough and learn in every stage of it.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
yes, I would love to collaborate with other professionals like models, photographers , makeup artists, holistic professionals and women with small business who focus on women empowerment. My hope is for Ritual Hair Studio to become a meeting place where women of all walks of life can find a safe space to be themselves and teach/ learn new things.
