We recently connected with Loreal Lacey and have shared our conversation below.
Loreal, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I’ve always had a knack for helping people. From listening to family and friends and trying to help them work through issues from my own experience , to seeing the elderly in the grocery store pick from the top shelf . I’ve always wanted to be part of the solution. Finding my purpose was actually the easy part . Knowing that I wanted to be of service rather career wise or just out in my daily life I set out to do just that. In all capacities.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’ve lived in Houston, Texas 10 years now. I came here from Chicago to work in death care and attended Commonwealth Institute of Funeral Services which I did graduate . Yes, I’m a licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer . I,ve recently added on pre arrangement counselor and currently working on my life insurance license .
After 10 years in death care I’ve seen A LOT of changes , experienced and learned so many things about people, how one grieves , myself and the best , everlasting relationships with people who trust me to help them navigate through loss and vulnerability. The one thing I saw a pattern in and no real change in tow was HOW families covered final arrangement cost. Go funds me , selling plates take time. I’ve watch so many families lose a loved one and not only grieve the loss but be burdened with the fact that the finances simply weren’t there . Wanting to help these families with more than a 5 or 10% discount I took a leap of faith and started Finally By Faith Nonprofit Organization where we focus on five key components: Financial Literacy, Life Insurance, PreArrangements, Grief Support, and Community Service .

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back evaluating everything the three qualifiers for me were already being in death care. Working with families daily some having financial security verses those who didn’t you see the difference in the final arrangement process. I knew from first hand experience the differences being financially secured and not . I have friends who will call me a philanthropist, I just say I’m a “people person” but having that ability allows those I sit with to be open with me because I’m transparent with them, I also fact check and offer the information in black and white not just telling me what they want to hear shows my families that I’m knowledgeable and might just know what I’m talking about , leading to the ultimate goal , TRUST .
I feel because I deal with families at such a vulnerable time, while asking for money , while having them sign paperwork being transparent, patient and empathetic.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
My biggest area of growth these last 12 months have definitely been confidence and consistency! While writing up my plan for Finally By Faith I continually told myself no one is going to buy life insurance as if it was something new rolling out , or no one will support and send money to feed the woman’s shelter or volunteer for these things and to my utter surprise my woman’s shelter events have been strictly donation based , there’s been times when I had to cut the volunteer list OFF . I told myself when it came to life insurance and pre arrangements that it’s not what you do it’s how you do it. I’m not trying to SALE anything , I’m just a death care advocate who sees the value in educating others on the importance of simply having your final affairs in order.
