Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lori Eubanks. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lori, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I developed my resilience at a young age. I was married at 19 and have my first child at 20. From a young age I was balancing it all.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m an impressionistic painter. I would paint even if I never sold another painting again. When my 3 children were young I said I wanted to paint professionally so that I could help pay for their college education. I sought out gallery representation which gave me more credibility. I think painting gave me more self confidence and also a greater sense of self worth. I can’t go too many days without painting or I feel grumpy. I lose myself when I paint and get into a zone. There is not another job that I would ever want to do. Painting large canvases makes me so happy! I sing and dance a lot when I paint. Often new music helps me take painting to a new level.I used to paint mainly florals but now I paint pretty much anything from landscapes to abstracts.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Having a good mentor or teacher. I started with classes at a local art league. I then found teachers whose work I admired.
2. I had a teacher who said painting is mileage. You have to paint hundreds of paintings to develop your skill and style.
3. Even when a painting isn’t working sometimes you have to just keep going. Sometimes it looks better in the morning. Sometimes it looks worse.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
My dad paid for me to take a weekly class with a teacher I admired, Tom Trausch. He helped me develop my skills. Also the other artists in the group would critique our work at the end and that provided great insight. I had young children when I started and if my dad hadn’t paid for my classes then I wouldn’t be painting or where I am today. I am very grateful for that!
