We recently connected with Lori Phun and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lori, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
Honestly, from being rejected—a lot. From a very young age, working as a film actor, I’ve heard more “no’s” than I can count. At first, it was tough, but over time, I’ve learned to embrace them. Each rejection taught me something, made me stronger, and brought me closer to the moments that matter. Now, I celebrate the “no’s” just as much as the “yes’s” because they’ve shaped who I am. Resilience isn’t just about bouncing back—it’s about finding value in every part of the journey, even the hard parts.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a singer/songwriter who began playing piano at the age of 5. During the quarantine in 2020, I started releasing my own music with my band partner, David. Our band, Lori & David, focuses on storytelling through sound and experimentation. Our latest single is titled FOCUS/NEVER HURT YOUR SOUL.
I am also a film actor, having started acting at the age of 4, beginning with print work and eventually transitioning to more commercial films. You might recognize me from projects such as Level 16, When Hope Calls, Odd Squad, or The Suitcase.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I believe that the three most important qualities for somebody wanting to enter the entertainment industry—or any industry—are resilience, open-mindedness, and shamelessness. For me, these three qualities helped me even begin releasing music without worrying about who’s listening or how it’s perceived. They helped me discover ways to promote my music and pushed me to keep going despite the challenges I face.
I would say that the best way to develop these qualities is to surround yourself with people who are better than you. Always, always hold yourself to a higher standard. Surround yourself with people who inspire you to be the best version of yourself. And if you can’t find anyone, you’re in the wrong place.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I’m looking to collaborate with musicians who aren’t just big dreamers but doers—people who are ready to get on their feet and run full speed toward their goals. I’m drawn to passionate, open-minded individuals who aren’t afraid to take risks and ask, “What if?”
On the technical side, I’m especially interested in working with those skilled in digital music production or who have a solid understanding of the music industry ecosystem. If this sounds like you, let’s connect! You can reach me on Instagram @loriphun or via email at [email protected].
I’m excited to hear from you and hopefully create something incredible together!
