Meet Lorielle Jackson

We were lucky to catch up with Lorielle Jackson recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Lorielle, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
Thank you for bringing up this topic; I have experienced my fair share of battles with imposter syndrome, and it’s something so relatable. Procrastination, obsessing over small details, and feeling overly nervous were my symptoms of imposter syndrome. The constant pressure to prove my self-worth led me to spend an absurd amount of time overcompensating, leaving me overwhelmed, exhausted, and consistently on the brink of burnout.

Listening to podcasts and talking to my therapist helped me let go of the notion that everything has to be flawless. Also, reflecting on my past accomplishments, both big and small, serves as a gentle reminder that I am capable of excelling at anything, even the seemingly challenging tasks. The mind is a tricky muscle, but it’s helpful to remember that our track records of success far exceed our track records of failure.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a science nerd turned creative entrepreneur. I studied Environmental Science at Florida A&M University and started teaching high school science shortly after graduating. At the age of 24, I was diagnosed with breast cancer, which completely shattered my world but also propelled me to begin my own business venture. Following my diagnosis and treatment, I embarked on a journey to find a creative outlet that would rekindle my imagination and help me rediscover joy. Making gifts became my go-to hobby, enabling me to uplift those around me and share in the much-needed joy I was in search of.

Starting with bridesmaid proposal gifts, birthday gifts, housewarming gifts, wedding gifts, baby shower gifts, and more, each gift I crafted ignited a life-changing spark within me, urging me to go further. The overwhelming love and heartfelt feedback I received from the gifts served as the inspiration to elevate my gift-making hobby into a full-fledged business.

Through my company, Pretty Brown Box, I have refined my expertise in curating personalized gifts that make the act of gift-giving easy and enjoyable for both the giver and the recipient. From the inception and expansion of my business, I have honed my skills in product design, procurement, product photography, videography, marketing campaigns, and website development. My sole mission is to transform every gift-giving moment into a spontaneous celebration almost like Christmas on a random day.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back on my journey, optimism, flexibility, and resourcefulness were the most impactful aspects for me. There were many moments when the challenges I faced seemed insurmountable. However, maintaining a hopeful outlook, leaning on my support system, and being willing to pivot when needed, helped me navigate the uncertainties that have come my way.

If I were to offer advice, I would encourage everyone to remain persistent and unwavering in their pursuit of their dreams. Along the way, obstacles will undoubtedly arise, but it is crucial to approach them with an open mind and a willingness to adapt and make necessary adjustments. Remember to seek out resources and support systems that can propel you closer to your ultimate goal. Whether it be through direct connections or individuals within your network, there is always someone out there who can offer guidance and assistance to help you reach your desired destination.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?A New Earth: Awakening To Your Life’s Purpose by Eckhart Tolle has revealed many “Ah Ha” moments for me. The subconscious mind has big influence over our personal and professional journeys in this world. This book dives into concepts like ego and introduces a term I learned called “pain body”, shedding light on triggers and emotional responses that can unintentionally hinder our journey to success. I stumbled across this book during COVID quarantine era and I highly recommended it, it’s even endorsed by Oprah herself.
