Meet Lorne Jackson

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lorne Jackson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lorne below.

Hi Lorne, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?

I would say I got my work ethic from being a pro athlete. It was instilled in me at a young age that if I wanted to get great at something you have to put in the hours for it, and not just the hours that is required but the extra hours when no one is around and looking is what counts and allows you to be great at whatever craft it is that you are pursuing. I had a very amazing support system being my family as well that helped to push me and support me in whatever it was that I wanted to accomplish. It takes village and in no way shape or form did I accomplish anything that I did on my own. But now being out of sport and in the business world I recall back to my sports playing days and using a Kobe like work ethic to get me where I want to get to in the business world.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I am a Southern California native born and raised. I was an athlete for my entire life playing basketball collegiately and also professionally overseas. I played my college ball at Pepperdine University and following that played in countries such as Mexico, Oman, and Germany. Since my respective sport had ended and I wanted to focus on then next phase of it was definitely a challenge for me but I didn’t just want to jump into anything that I didn’t enjoy and didn’t love. It was always a dream of mine of wanting to work for myself and become an entrepreneur and I can proudly say that is exactly what ive been working towards. I recently started working in the insurance industry as an agent teaching financial literacy to those who need it and also helping individuals and families with their comprehensive financial planning needs. I felt a need for this because coming from a minority community this kind of information isn’t taught to us and is a crucial part of spreading generational wealth throughout our families. It has been a true blessing being able to educate those who are needing the information. Alot of people spend their money on things that are materialistic which is totally fine if thats what you want but in my opinion I don’t think anything that you can buy is more important than your own life so its always something to take into cosideration.
I have since also been working in House Music where I also found a great passion. A music genre I once didn’t really care for I have become one of the biggest advocates for. I helped to manage one of the hottest up and coming DJ Duos on the scene right now by the name of SweetLikeChocolate who are based here in LA. I was also fortunate enough to take it a step further and create an all black house music collective by the name of The Chocolate House which champions the DJ’s of color in the electronic scene. Both have been monumental in changing the way that people think of electronic music. Making the shift into entertainment and finance from sport was kind of a natural transition for me and is something that I grew a great passion for.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

First I would say you should never think that you know everything you need to know. I believe that is when you truly don’t know anything at all.

Second I would say that if you want to get where you want in life it’s important to have a good team of individuals or support system around you. Hardly anyone that I can think of who is successful in whatever is they did made It there alone.

Lastly I would say it’s important to stay disciplined and motivated in what you do. Without having goals in mind and a clear vision all your motion and energy is wasted because it has no purpose in it.

For those early in their journey I would say that it’s important they do what makes them happy and something they are passionate about. And if they strongly feel that way don’t let anyone or anything steer them off course.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

I think that as life has gotten tougher there has been a few changes that I’ve needed to make that I typically wouldn’t do in life. In the past when I felt overwhelmed I would keep things to myself and keep everything bottled in which I thought was an effective way but the older I get I have since felt different ways on it. I’ve now realized that it is totally ok to ask others for help or just talk to someone about your going through because maybe they can relate to what it is that your feeling and its just good to know that that when times get tough that you don’t have to experience this all by yourself.
