Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lottie Hulme. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lottie, thrilled to have you on the platform as I think our readers can really benefit from your insights and experiences. In particular, we’d love to hear about how you think about burnout, avoiding or overcoming burnout, etc.
Burnout can creep up on us so easily, and I’ve narrowly avoided it a few times. My best tip to avoiding burnout is to set aside time for work, then set aside time for yourself. At around 7pm every day I tell myself that’s the end of work, and now it’s time for family, for friends, for sport, or a hobby, you name it. But I have that cut off, and for me that’s so important, especially as a mum to my little girl Aurora, and a dog mum! I’ll work super hard all day, ticking things off my to-do list and doing my job, but as soon as my cut off time hits, it’s time to close the laptop. I also like to stay super organised too. I’m old-fashioned in the respect that I write everything I need to do down in my diary, not on a phone or tablet. I’ll fill up my week days with tasks and places to be and people to meet, but nine times out of ten my weekends will be for selfcare, family time and for having fun. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had times where I’ve failed at turning off and I’ve pushed myself to do absolutely everything, nearly causing burnout as a result, but as I’ve got older I’ve learnt that I can only be the best version of myself if I take time for myself too. Everything in moderation!
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I work as a Senior Showbiz Reporter for The Sun. It’s a job I absolutely love as I’ve always been very interested in the world of celebs and entertainment. In my time away from the role, I’m a new mum working on my first book on parenting and pregnancy, which is something I’m very excited about. I also run a showbiz TikTok channel where I do daily videos on the hottest celeb and entertainment news.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I always think of the Beatles when I think of pushing myself in my career – they were knocked back and experienced failure in their early career but they kept going and showed resilience. This is why resilience has been one of my best qualities. I used to struggle with being turned down or unsuccessful when I was forging my way into the journalism world in the early years of my career, but now I see my knock backs as lessons, and what’s for me won’t pass me by.
A skill I think I’ve benefited from having is my knowledge of SEO and social media. When I produce articles or pieces of work I like to promote them on my platforms and push them out to audiences so that they’re seen, and in turn this has helped with self promotion and ‘getting seen.’
I also think being personable can go a long way. Treat people how you’d expect to be treated, and always be kind.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
I do feel overwhelmed sometimes. The day might be brimming with interviews and events, and you’ve got articles to produce and emails to reply to, as well as tending to a family and generally just looking after yourself, and all of a sudden it all becomes too much. This is so normal and something everyone feels from time to time. I deal with it by taking a quick time out and doing something I like. This can be as simple as popping to make my favourite hot drink, or making a lunch I know I love. It could be getting out into the fresh air and walking my dog, or flicking through a magazine and taking five or doing a bit of online shopping. If you’re feeling overwhelmed just stop, do something you love, big or small, and then jump back into what it was you were doing. Another tip would be, don’t take on too much. Sometimes I’ll give myself so many tasks to do each day and I feel flustered if it gets to the evening and I haven’t completed them. Now, I look at the list and set aside the ones that aren’t time conscious and can be done another day. This way, I can come back to them at a later date and not stress about something that really doesn’t need stressing over! Simple!
